I basically put scream 4 on the tape distortion setting on most things. Then i EQ it again. It just makes things slightly less harsh and a bit thicker imo.

yup. synthesis can produce some great results but nothing compares to using a 12bit pcm rompler straight into the sampler, all those output converters just adding to the sound :lol:
but seriously, you can do almost anything with a sample, sound design, drums, atmosphere... probably the most versatile thing in my studio.
Are you usually happy with the source audio you start off with? Or is it any sample and then just a shit load of processing?

For mid range, I've a library of different reese sounds sampled from dnb tunes, analog synths, traded with other producers, ones I made and so on, I just load one in and process it with the usual chorus, distortion, etc, saves a lot of time. For pads, I try to find a nice waveform, maybe add some movement and then bounce a single note from one of my synths or romplers and do all the filtering / processing internally in the sampler, saves a lot of cpu if I don't want to commit to a sound right away. I don't go crazy with the granular stuff nor sample mangling tbh.

Volcano and Micro's filters practically sing, Saturn makes things sound crunchy and warm even when slammed, Pro-C can pump really musically. In the end it might not sound right for the particular song you're working on, but nothing coming out of a fab plugin ever sounds 'bad'. That's why I use Pro-Q for very extreme EQ'ing.

Massive: Obvious reasons.

Camelcrusher: I love this so much. It just adds so much to synths without destroying them.

Nexus: Presets. EQ them to fit. One of my favourites. Plus, I love its piano.

Pretty much all of the Ableton stock effects: They're easy do use and do what you want them to. What more do you need?

Interesting, I am in need of another eq as well. Ableton's stock eq barely cuts it (that's a pun), i always use an auto filter in conjunction just to be safe. I usually have crazy eqing as well, i might have 2-3 synths that need to sit well with each other so ill shape one synth around what the other synth is putting out.

From the videos I saw on Saturn, it looked great and i would agree. You can really push it to the extreme without compromising the sound.

All of the fabfilter plugins are great - they do what a vst should and take advantage of a modern computer. Lovely displays, drag and drop modulation, visual feedback, pop up tooltips, nice sound quality, easy to use but have endless possibilities.

Is Pro-Q heavy on the CPU? Id only use it for fitting sounds together, not just for a simple low pass here or boost there. I am figuring maybe 8 instances at the most.

I already know I am going to have to change my workflow for some of the VST's I am looking at because most of my tracks hit around 70-80% when finished already.

I have a problem bouncing down...

I notice the CPU strain adding up after a few instances, especially when I have the visual analyzers on. That's why I reserve it for extremes :). I can do in one instance of fab filter what takes me 3 instances of FL's native. It's my go-to if I'm boosting frequencies too.

Good to know, I avoid boosting right now (besides 1-2db) because I am using Abletons native.. Boosting sounds like shit so i hear, unless its a good eq. I love the visual eq aspect of it (it is something i am looking forward to in Ableton 9 but not sure if i can wait, not sure of the quality ether).

Id only use it on my mixing channels really, 8 instances sound like a bit much?

Fabfilter. (Pro-Q, L, C, DS, Saturn, Timeless). Timeless is the most beautiful delay in world history.

I didn't see a thread like this, so I decided to make one. I want to kind of give people a bit more confidence, about what to pick for plugins. :) I made a template below, with my data on it too, of different plugin categories, so all you have to do, is copy, paste, and fill in what you use... :W:

Synth: Nexus, Sylenth1, Massive, FM8, Absynth4, Predator (Still new to it.) Oooh.. I have Bleep, and BendBox too! :6:

Ambience: Absynth4, and FM8

Sampler: Live Sampler, Simpler, and DrumRack... I have Battery, but I don't really like it...

EQ: FabFilter Pro-Q (I would never leave home without it...)

Compressor, (Multiband, Bus, Parallel etc...): Live Compressor (For Sidechain), Live Multiband, CLA-2A, CLA-3A, and C1... I have C6, but I haven't figured out how to view gain reduction, so I just use Ozone 5 instead for mastering...

Limiter: Waves L3, L316, And Ozone 5

Delay: Uhbik-D Delay

Reverb: Glace

Gate: Live Gate

Filter: Live Auto Filter

Distortion: Sausage Fattener, and Ohmicide
