Sounding like someone else.

Post by antman » Thu Dec 27, 2012 4:43 am

Aye peeps.

Posted my latest WIP in the feedback thread when someone made me realize I made a track that sounds like a shitty version of a megalodon tune. Id heard of megalodon but never heard this tune before.

Heres the tune

AAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaand heres what I made..

Soundcloud

So now, basically I feel dumb, and not even like finishing the tune just because I do NOT want to feel like I bit off someones tune.

How do you guys feel about sounding like someone else? Is it a good thing? Is it bad? :u: :u:

All this Hench stuff sounds really similar, which is not exactly a bad thing.

Nice tune man, nothing really wrong with sounding alike to someone, pretty common these days. Megalodon is sick, I'd be proud of myself.

I think the key to biting is to bit as many people as possible; that's the closest to originality you'll ever get. And bite from shit that isn't related to the genre you produce; that blows people's minds.
Do you say zerbaman? Or do you say zebraman?

Try to finish the tune you would without prior knowledge of the Megalodon tune and whatever comes out of it is yours.

Everyone starts out sounding like someone else... and then they sound like a bunch of people... and then their own touch slowly starts seeping in. It's part of the whole process of being a producer.

But it don't matta man. Make your tunes.

just finish it and call it a VIP like a Fugin boss.

PS i dig your Bline quite a bit. sample some the drums he uses out and jsut mash it up quick. Solid banger.

Mmmm no, not really.

To OP: maybe you didn't try to straight up imitate this dude, but you're both probably taking direct influence from the same guys from the same genre, using the same techniques and the same plugins with pretty much the same ideas. What do you expect? Listen to jazz and other non-electronic shit for 6 hours straight THEN go make dubstep.

You shoulda played it off cool like "...ya I ghost produce for him."

Seriously though, that is a pretty crushing feeling, but keep on with it and either ignore it and do what you were planning on doing or take note of what you don't like in his track and make an effort to do what you think sounds even better.

it sucks to have that happen
or having an idea, not finding the time to make it happen and suddenly someone else has done it

but to me it shows that i was taking shortcuts/stereotypical thinking, that my inspiration was the same as someone else from across the globe. so everytime that happens i reassess my influences and creative process.

Tbh all you'd need to do would be to change the bass rhythm a bit. With that in place, I doubt many people would link it back to Megalodon.

in terms of the fact that it's dubstep and you have a similar sound to your bassline, it's similar. But dude there is a lot of stuff that sounds like that. Yours is yours! Finish it and it fits in with those kinds of songs for dj's to play with.
