Yeah i didn't get very far but i want to give it a proper go next time. I should probably find a guide to read. So i was reading about it but nothing i read really mentioned the AI and what part that plays in the whole thing.
Also, what effect does it have when you are first starting a map and you are sort of 'aging' it (i can't remember what they called it in the game)?

honestly you need third party apps like dwarf therapist to play it
google the lazy newbs pack, best intro to DF
ffs i have printed out a 20 page guide just on rock due to DF, it's such an involved game
i watched about 4 hours of tutorials before understanding the UI

wow thats nuts

thanks i will check those out

The guys who are building this must be pretty unusual. I think i read that it's 2 brothers.. It's interesting that they consider it their life's work and as such will never be 'finished' and they will just keep adding to it.. At least that's what i read on the wiki.. I would like to have a project like that. I want to make a universe populated by AI entities that evolve over time, i know im far from the first person to come up with the idea but i have always wanted to do that.

It's one guy deving it, his brother markets it. He lives of donations and he made it his lifelong goal to finish or make the most complex close to real life game ever, which sums up Dwarf Fortress well.

his old games are great as well

oh right the brother just does marketing.

LGWI looks interesting, i can see he is generally not interested in making his games look nice and focuses on game mechanics

I know this is probably a question that comes up a lot, but if he wants to make his game as close to real life as possible does he intend to replace the graphics engine with a 3D realistic one in the future? Not that i think it needs it just curious.

I was thinking about doing this course, its free: https://www.edx.org/courses/BerkeleyX/C ... ring/about

OK i program for a living and all self taught.
If you have a passion you don't need some BS college course you will teach yourself it (it's how most studios start)
Game Dev courses will teach you how to make a shit game like modern Call of Duty.

Well that course is an AI course but it is not intended for games, it's like a serious computer science course from Berkley and as far as i can tell it deals with some fairly advanced topics.

I know what you are saying though, what i know is mostly self taught too but i think with things like advanced AI and science it can't hurt to take a college course :P

Dwarf Fortress rapes CPU and RAM for AI behavior, heh you should watch me stream it some time or Gnomoria
DF is the most complex game ever and best part is it's free.
