I never bought into the "gaming" hardware hype, tends to be overpriced crap imo.
Sins of a Solar Empire is supposed to be good, the Sword of the Stars series is good, Endless Space, Civ 4 & 5 id you want to include them.
I don't know where you boundaries lie in the genre because I'd recommend some grand strategy titles as well like Europa Universalis 3.
