Skrill Question (NOT monster bass bullshit)

Post by CE9958 » Tue Jan 15, 2013 4:21 am

Hey,

So there's this sound in a Skrill song I heard recently that I really like but I can't quite figure it out. Its a real short little stab of what I think is based off of a square wave but what comes after that is a bit uncertain for me. Check it out and let me know if you can come up with anything!

Heres a link to the sound:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aZ-YRoJrnQ

Happens at around 1:10 at the end of the phrase. The modulated sort of clean squarey hoovery something awesome.

Thanks so much everyone!

I think I know what sound you are talking about. Its like a quick WOOOOMp! Honestly I don't know how to make that exact sound but I've made similar sounds running some detuned saw waves into a bandreject in massive. If you automate the bandwidth on the BR filter and also maybe the midi EQ range then you can get a similar "clean womp" type sound.

Note: there might be some very subtle pitch enveloping I suspect

I've always found that trying to emulate the movement is a great place to start. The aesthetic characteristics of the sound can be made after. Getting the movement down/context might really help flesh it out. And who knows, you might actually make something better and more unique than that...

ok so i took some time to try to design this sound in ableton. I think I got pretty damn close. At least closer than I thought I would.

Made it will lfo's, env's in massive, and layering and distortion

That's pretty close neonmansion, nicely
I would've guessed it was a saw automating into a square with bandrejects, mild scream filtering and distortion, something typical higher in the mid section too. Are you cool with telling us how you made it dawg? It also sounds like it could have some formants going on kind of the same deal when creating voweling type growl basses and reese basses

Well I made the root sound in massive (only thing complex is I added some complex envelope shapes to create attack and tearing sounds)

then I added an envelope linked to a formant filter and a pro-52 filter in guitar rig

then I added some AMP distortion, some Multiband compression, some Limiting, And lastly I cranked a compressor to get the attack loud

use some triangle waves in FM8 with some sines or other triangles at higher ratios, sweep a double notch EQ on that.

then you should have your sound.

the audio sample was on my soundcloud.. but I want you guys to be able to see it and not my general followers. I set it to private but that seemed to block any links. Is there a way to give a secret link or something?
