This isn't really an either/or situation in my mind.
If you choose to study electrical engineering/computer science/informatics/IT then I can assure you any half decent school will have a lot of audio/media modules related to this. I know a few guys who did elec. eng., did their projects on guitar amps; I know guys who did computer science, did their projects on VSTs, audio software etc.
Also, as someone who's graduated and looking for technical work, you fulfil a lot more job descriptions if you can code in a popular language or you know your way around a circuit.
