also - i find it interesting to see how different the reactions to that subject are depending on the scene. i used to post a lot on the sonic youth board and the exact same thread came up, except on there people answering they used ear plugs like most of you did were really the exception. most people were like "blasting music full volume day & night - no earplug Policy yolo"

You could just turn your headphones down. :6:

I've got a few packets of disposable ones they hand out from nights out, I'll normally take a packet with me just in case.

This. Those moments when you really don't want to take a break and you feel it's putting a strain on your hearing, just
pop those free plugs in and you're crackin.

Every show - standard. It's silly not to!
Eat Bass wrote:also, i was right near datsik during the show and he didnt seem to be wearing any ear protection, do big dj's usually do this?
Any sensible DJ will at least take earplugs to every gig. Unless the system is really quiet there's no good reason to not wear earplugs.
Sometimes I'll take them out when I'm actually on the decks - depends on what the monitoring is like.
Eat Bass wrote:lastly, does anyone know if any fairly priced custom ear plugs that allow for some conversation and block all frequencies fairly evenly?
I'm pretty sure most people who do custom moulds let you specify the amount of attenuation you want the plugs to provide.
I'd love some custom plugs but I'd just lose them. I'm quite happy sticking to ER-20s, have lost and re-purchased 3 or 4 pairs of them now.
dubluke wrote:got a bad case of tinnitus a few years back that passed (or at least I stopped noticing it) after about a year. Got a bit lax after that
Dude, don't get lax! Tinnitus never goes away. The 'sound' of your ears ringing is the 'sound' of any damaged or missing hairs inside your ears - the hairs which pick up vibration in the air and provide you with your hearing to begin with. These don't grow back. Hopefully science will be able to fix our ears in the future, but until then, earplugs at every gig!

ER20s every night for me, until I get some better ones. I'm thinking about getting some custom moulded ones; I don't like the way the ER20s stick out of my ears slightly.
