Cosmos - Bass/Sub bass

Post by ParadigmAU » Tue Jan 29, 2013 11:01 am

Really loving the low end on Goth Trads track Cosmos

Does it sound like a straight low passed sine or what to you guys?
I'd like to get something similar sounding.

anyone? thanks !
Lowpass filter on an stabby organ style sound should sound similar, a good starting point is the Flenders I & II wavetables in Massive, if you have it.
dotcurrency wrote:Two sounds I want:
1. The main stab. Whenever I make my own stabs they sound shitty, too fast or too slow (never just right, no matter what speed) or too "cutting".
2. The sound before the stab 0.58 sounds like it warps into the stab.

I fucking love this track, by stab do you mean the "laser" style synths?

A good thing I like to get stabs/lasers/plucks sync'd right is use the performer in Massive linked to a filter.

As for the sound at 0.58, sounds like typical xKore midrange growl. I know he uses the "Crude" wavetable in Massive for a lot of sounds so that might be a good place to start esp. on bend+/- mode, try linking the wavetable position or intensity to a pluck shaped envelope and maybe add some phase modulation, obviously disto & reverb will help too. Sounds like some definite automation to get the AHH>OHH vocal quality, which you can do using EQ or filtering, I would automate it manually outside Massive to follow the shape of the sound you make in Massive.

:h:
I've never really thought of using the performer for stabs! Neither have I messed with the "Crude" wavetable too much. Hrs of Massive sound design sessions here I come! Thanks a lot man!

looks like sine filter mods and pitch bending. I'm about to run sound for goth trad on the 20th, so stoked to hear this live.

How does spor / noisia do this particular Synth effect?

Post by Kurups » Tue Jan 29, 2013 9:27 pm

Hey guys sorry if posting this thread is breaking any rules.... let me know if i am.

Anyways - i have been trying to reproduce this synth effect with the LFO routed to all sorts of shit including the cutoff and the pan and the main output volume. .. nothing seems to work.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFVqzLNyd-k&t=1m50s ESPECIALLY at 2:02

another KIND of similar effect but not quite as prominent in the areas im referring to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8DlnVIu_iw&t=1m40s

Notice how the synth kind of comes fom far away to close up (done with volume change) and the obvious panning? I've put lfo's to both of these and still get nothing similar.. at least not how they make it sound.. Can i get any tips? Appreciate all the help! Thanks

It's a reese sound. lots of info about this sound on the reese bass thread. The main movement of the sound comes from a high pass filter, the rest is from the reese sound itself.

Man the amount of times the answer i've gotten has been "it's a reese" kills me

i know that it's TRUE but there's so much more to it than just detuning two waveforms :( there must be an external effect at play here? LIke a parabolic shaper or SOME thing to make that incredible movement (more so than just modulating a high pass filter, right?)

Hence why I directed you to the reese thread. FX chains, resampling, splitting the frequencies and adding movement; it's all covered in that thread. Have a read through it and experiment. Dig through DOA for some reese threads too, tons of info.

'Its a reese' replies make me lol. We know it's a reese, that's like saying "It's a melody" to someone asking how to play that lead motif. :corntard:

There's a GATER on the reese. That's what you're looking for right? That almost skippy sound to it?

You can do that with dBlueGlitch or FL Studios Grossbeat. Put the Wet% at around 50.

theres so may different combinations of filtering you can do w reeses. honestly fuck around with as many different filters as you can and see what u can come up with. Even use the same type of filters but use them differently (ie. different cutoffs, different Qs/ more or less resonance, different rates of movement). just be really creative.

I'm not saying that this is how spor does the bass in his stompbox remix, but itll give you an idea of how much you can do with just a reese and a bunch of filters

That is a Wurlitzer 200a, although a Rhodes would sound more or less indistinguishable under all those effects
