Hello all! I've been reading this site for awhile and finally decided to post. I found this song the other day while warming up for track practice and it blew my mind. The high pitch sound that comes in at 1:13 is phenomenal. I've heard KTN throw a similar sound in his new M Machine Remix. Anyone care to help me out on how to make that sound. Any synth is fine, just want to know the sound design behind it.

The drop bass, there are some variations but its mostly the same patch. Then changes up at 55 seconds.

Hi everyone - I want to get some tips on how to do this particular technique which I believe is just a really strong sidechaining method. In this song by Skrillex, at about 4:30+ he comes in with a snare that really pumps hard. The thing that I'm confused on is exactly how he gets it to sounds like it's breaking through each time it hits. It really sounds nice.

From what I understand this is just sidechaining and a reverse snare leading up to it, however I'm sure there is some stuff going on with the attack/release or something else that I don't quite understand. When I reverse a snare and add heavy sidechaining, I can't achieve this level of effect. Was hoping someone can help me with some pointers on how to make it slam like this.

I know it's Skrillex, but please try and refrain from any bs.

Yes it's the With You, Friends (Long Drive) track that is on the Scary Monsters Disc 1. It's towards the end part of the song when the hard hitting beat comes in around 4:30

He's just using sidechain comp on the pad-ish chords with a medium long release. It seems alot bumpier since there hasnt been much sidechaining earlier in the tune, if that makes sense. I dunno how experienced u are with sidechaining, but should be pretty easy

Hey thanks Blink - I do know how to sidechain, however I'm still learning to better understand attack/relase/ratio etc. However, It seems like he has a reserve snare or something else that's really powering the way it hits each time. Is there anything you'd suggest to really make it stand out like the way he did it here?

It's really just heavy sidechaining with the release timed well to the decay of the snare so they sort of bleed together. When trying to use reverse snares, take the snare you're using, pitch it down a bit and lower the volume then line it up perfectly in reverse - pitching/lowering the volume stops you taking away the punch of your actual snare. Also there's layered claps on that snare making it sound big, maybe some low end too.

I was just about to post this!!!! I want to know how to make that reese RIGHT at the drop thats so hollowed specifically, but all the basses in this tune are biggggggggggggggggggggggg ugh.


I also want to know as much info about the drums in the intro! Like the percs, and the reversed kicks and how smooth they go into the normal ones

NINJA EDIT: Getter's Fallout bass. 100% NI Massive (other than the probable EQing). How do I make it? I understand that he either bounced down 2 versions to audio, or he used a performer. Please help. I don't necessarily want to make the exact bass, I just want to know how he did it, because when I use a performer, and throw on a triangle wave in the perf., it goes too high.

A couple things that stand out to me in this synth, obviously there's a lot of unison going on somehow so your going to have to experiment with a few ways of creating that. Secondly its definitely saw based which you already know. I can also hear a synth underneath which sounds like some sort of sine wave.
With all these types of synths theres usually a sort of chord within your soft synth, this sounds like a fifth to me, so in your soft synth change one oscillator to plus or minus seven semitones.
Play about with the pulse saw oscillators if you're in massive, they are usually good for this sort of sound.
Again if you're in massive, go to the voicing section put sort of four unison on maybe, and then on the pitch cutoff tab, make it full, change it to chord, and change the one to a seven, this gives a great natural sounding unison without the cheesy pitch cutoff sound.
Other than that, you won't need much intensity on your oscillators, put a lowpass on it, maybe mixed with a bandpass, and use some small reverb and dimension expander to give it some dynamics.
I've gotten pretty close with these methods, if you want to add a bit more grit for more of a 'purple' sound, then layer it with a sine and a saw with some distortion on them. Hope this helps! should give you some ideas at least and will definitely give you a similar sound. I can post a patch I've made if you're really stuck.
