Derek (TV show)

Post by bassrael » Fri Feb 15, 2013 12:33 am

just watched the third episode of the new Ricky Gervais show. It is quite sad but also really good. Brilliant writing, camera, music and characters. Best thing he did since The Office.
Rickys character isn´t really the main thing, Hannah and Dougie (Karl Pilkington) are very good.

It´s also really touching at times i had to shed a tear :(
has anyone seen it?

Saw the pilot and thought it was shit. Big fan of Ricky Gervais but I really don't like this. I think its more personal fun of making this than actually trying to make a good TV show. Karl is good in it but definitely seems like hes been put in so Ricky can have more fun during filming... I genuinely believe if some unknown made this it wouldn't have made it onto TV, its because its Gervais, and more importantly starring Karl, that its on TV.

I can understand the character being simple yet kind and sincere but Ricky does play him terribly.. and after all that exposure he got in the media because he says 'mong' all the time and taking pictures of himself pulling a spastic face in the bath, you can see why people misunderstood him for just taking the piss. He should have realised he wasn't the best man to play Derek.

You can definitely tell Stephen Merchant hasn't had any input in this because imo its far weaker than The Office and Extras.. just like The Invention of Lying was far weaker than Cemetery Junction. Merchant doesn't get enough credit I don't think, the stuff they've made together is a lot better than what Ricky has done on his own/without Merchant.

As for the best thing hes done.. I find it hard to believe there will be a scene in Derek that can top the Big Brother speech in the Extras Christmas Special. One of the best scenes in recent TV.

I think it's sad how poor Gervais has became in recent times. The Office was 10/10, Extras 9/10, Lifes Too short 7/10 and Derek, 5/10.

I get his angle, but it's just poorly done and his rinsing of the mockumentary is no longer ground breaking. I appreciate him for the quality he's given, plus Idiot Abroad and the Xfm stuff was great, but he's became the thing he used to despise, a cliched comedian with gags similar to When the whistle blows.

I found it's really easy to watch and Pilkington is well funny, but it's also at times a bit overly simplistic and sentimental..if they have some more crying scenes after an old lady's died I think I'll lose interest in it. Certainly not terrible tho and ye you can't beat their podcasts with Pilkington

started watchin this after finishing idiot abroad/gervais show, really like it
sometimes the acting from ricky is a bit meh, but he is doing a role different from his others, and i have a feeling he'll grow into the role more as it progresses
pilkinton is basically playing himself but it fits in perfect, love it when he freaks out on the fat daughter of the old woman who died, amazin lmao

Thought this was gervais's worst comedy writing yet, apart from that wank film he made, and that that other wank film he made, oh and that other wanky film he was in.
