Added more layers in the intro/breakdown, made the drop more crisp and interesting.

Thoughts?

@lyons238, i definitely thought the sound design was done well. the melody fits as well. its not my style of music but it seems to be done well, just remember its hard to keep your workflow going after youve bounced it down to audio and showed it to people. :P

@johnkimble, no reason to be ashamed man, your tune has some serious groove and momentum. aside from that the melody keeps it nice and chill.
the beat is original and like i said, it has that shuffle momentum. i luv dat xD
in all seriousness, nice fecking track man, i enjoyed the full listen. if anything the lead that comes in around 1:40 felt a bit out of place but it smooths out as it goes.
good work mate.

@mason, pretty nice chill tune you have going on. i liked the hats and the groove up there, but i agree with kimble on the kick having a slightly "off" placement.
i think it takes away from the overall flow of things but i definitely like the atmosphere at the drop man. other than that, maybe work on making the intro more captivating because the bassline is very nice, but it should be built up a bit more.

@dot, i enjoy the track for sure. i would lower the level of that crackle in the intro, and i would bring the intro down all together so its doesnt make the bassline seem so weak. (its not, but the build up makes it seem that way) i like how the vocals come in at the drop, its very subtle and happens without it being to abrupt or obvious.
i thought that reverby snare was cool but way too wet, especially with that dry kick that cuts it off everytime. very nice work though, has a lot of nice details and it sticks to one solid feel throughout. good job.

alrighty, well i always like to try something new to break out of my writers block, so here is a "trap-step" tune that i made.
its my first try at trap, so let me know what you think!
oh, and enjoy the listen guise ! =P

True i definitely need to work on my workflow and stop making incomplete loops. Any pointers on what direction I should take it?

@ your tune: i like the vibe. the bass does have that trappy feel and i love the little stuttering subtle synth and pads. i think the intro needs some work though. maybe incorporate some melody. perhaps use your bass line for the melody but use horns instead then just before the drop, filter the horns and drop into the same melody but with the bass? try this out i'd be very interested in how this sounds.

haha well ill be honest, the number one workflow destroyer in my case, is getting high. i lose a lot of motivation that way.
its nice to starve yourself from ANY indulgence, so that you stay focused on the work until its done, then you reward yourself for finishing it.
to prepare for making a song, ill wake up, make some coffee and get to work usually.and keep working until i have at least half of the song done (intro,a section,b section,a section)

more detailed pointers as to how to keep the train moving while creating, is to get things mapped out quickly, and move on. as soon as the idea for an instrument is there and it sounds decent, start working on the next instrument.
i use the analogy of drawing a picture. before the picture is done its going to look like a bunch of random lines, a big mess of incoherence. but once the lines are connected and the whole message is there, the picture portrays a meaning.
so dont get hung up on getting things to sound perfect, you have no clue how it will sound all together until you try it.

ive found that when you work on the same song over the course of multiple days, the vibe gets lost, and when that happens its just structured noise. its no longer portaying an emotion through music because there are mixed signals
but, my way is not "the" way, i assume everyone sort of finds their own way to get a good work flow, but thats pretty much how i do it :4:
(hopefully you find this useful haha)

good idea with the horns man, seems like a nice way to get people ready for the melody at the drop!

getting high actually helps me write bass lines but it kinda fucks me with sound design and mixing because i get way too caught up in tweaking and end up finding myself 2 hours later burnt out as fuck with a shitty sounding, over effected bass and a mess of sends. any pointers on where i should take the tune. like maybe what to do next or what the intro should be like. now that im stuck on that one melody loop im having a hard time coming up with a way to kind of transfer into a different riff. im thinking maybe have a nasty twisting reese come after the first riff, then go back into the wobbly riff, then maybe another different twisty reese dropping into a plucky bass? idk

but yeah try the horns idea asap i wanna hear this! and it should be fairly simple to do.

Flywheel; The intro is pretty nice! Don't need to change anything here. You can try putting some atmosphere-fx in the build. It will be more interesting. The vocals is a little high volume. The drop is dope. I hope you will add something between the wubs! Dope track so far! Just miss the small details!

Eye-sic; The bass is a little high. Try EQ it a little and set down the volume a little! The lead could be a little louder too. Want to hear more of it. Try some more variation too!

What you guuuuys think about this one:

The drop was decent, work on the buildup. I felt like the whole song was just built around the drop, and it should be more than that. Give it more of a melody, and you have yourself a good track. More variation in the drop would help quite a bit. Overall though, pretty good!

i made a pertty gritty reese for my track. took me about two hours

the mix down is terrible and i just slapped a limiter on there for now, so shits sounding a bit foggy, but you get the idea. now i just gotta clean it up and add a plucky bass and change up the wobbly bass. let me know what you guys think of the reese work.

I like the groove that track has to it. The reese itself sounds like it might have too much dimension expander? If you did it in Massive? I say this because it sounds more hollow and liquid-esque than a reese should, especially near the end. Other than that, I'm digging the track a lot.

yeah massive. i used a bit of unison on it, i dont think dimension expander. but there's also a lot of notching going on. maybe i should take a few notches out? but thanks for the kind words mate.

Cont. PG 33. Never posted my track/got feedback. So here it is.

Soundcloud

Does my drop work with the rest? And am I missing chords or something behind it? Idk if it sounds a bit empty or not.. I'm mind fucked right now and can't tell. My only question is the drop. I think the rest is fine, i just need to add some sweeps later.

Or should I redo the whole drop?

@alexeyhermann your track is dope man. sounds really legit, just needs a better mixdown and mastering and it will be perfect. reminds me of zeds dead...

@evilmoonmoose your track needs some work, what type of music are you aiming for? maybe i can help. I'd say put some sweeps(white noise) almost like wind sounds to match your tone of the song. Needs some movement in the beginning and for some other parts.

@difference nice drum work in your song, when the hi hat stops at around :13 i think you should put a delay, or ping pong effect or large reverb on the last hit so it echoes. probably will sound legit. i think your snare sounds a lil bit too dry compared to the other sounds. give it a more spacey reverb hit or something.

This is pretty dope, the intro is really good, inspired by LRAD by any chance? :P
Imo the oi/yoi bits on the drop could be thicker, maybe play around with those sounds more and try layering/distortion/saturating to get them grittier.

Haha, By Knife Party? My friend actually pointed that out the other day to me...damn Vengeance sample packs haha. I need to find a different sample pack for vocals... :l

Yeah I'm pretty nubbish with effects on sounds. There's only WOW filters + some compression so far on all the sounds at the drop.

What's a good 3rd party saturator? Every time I try to add distortion or saturation with the built-in Ableton effects it turns out to shit :P

And do you resample your basses?

Haha yeah, what Vengeance pack is it out of interest?

For saturators/exciters a few to look at: FerricTDS (free), ThrillseekerXTC (free), TesslaSE (free), FabFilter Saturn (paid), Noveltech Character (paid) - I've also been looking at SoundToys Decapitator recently, not tried it though.

And I only resample sometimes, a lot of the time I get lazy unless it's stuff like reeses.

@daeMTHAFKNkim: After relistening on my monitors: Intro still sounds nice, but as before the lack of weight on the drop is still noticeable - I think it's because you've got upper midrange and low end but not much in between. Like I said before try layering or maybe even bringing some things down an octave. Also sidechaining some chords behind might help. :W:

@Eat Bass: Some nice ideas and sound work, although there seems to be some rogue reverb somewhere (on the reese maybe?) making everything sound super cloudy, try scooping out some mids and tightening the low end to bring the reese together. The drums I'd say need some work too - the kick it a bit clumpy, try to punch it up a little so it really kicks through the reese.

@BloodySnort:
Intro is quite cool, nice panning going on. Definitely some good ideas on the drop but I think the main sound needs some more work, try varying it too - maybe make 2/3 of the same midrange slightly tweaked and chop/change between them. The mix sounds okay, maybe clear up some mud around 500Hz-ish and push out your snare some more.

@Eye-siC: Decent vibe on this track, the drums are nice and the bass is clear - there's a nice amount of "air" in the track too. Personally I'd think about adding something in the high/midrange - maybe playing a melody just to add more depth to the track. Some vocals might sound good in this too?

-----

So I spent my day off today locked at my PC making this, I can't tell what sounds good/bad any more so imma take a break and wait on feedback (and yeah its 125 not 140bpm. ):

@mthrfnk - great intro atmosphere with the rain and lightning. Loving the chopped up vocal sample as well!. This track is actually very good, love the housey vibe to it. Great crispness to the kick and snare. The only thing I can tell that it is missing is more vocals IMO, maybe an actual female singer along with the chopped voice. It's your track though and it's sounding great!

@daeMTHAFKNkim - love the pluck in the intro and the filter in of the main synth! IMO maybe some thick underlying chords in the intro would make the track sound better. Drop actually sounds kind of thin to me, maybe add a ride cymbal or something in the high ending hitting on every beat. I couldn't exactly hear much subbass maybe just because I'm listening on headphones so I'll leave that up to someone with monitors. Great arrangement don't stop working on this track!

@BloodySnort - The buildup is definitely lacking - I liked the first couple sounds of the drop but then it kinda sounds straight out of massive after that. Didn't hear enough low end but again that could just be my headphones. Keep workin on it for sure!

Wow lots of great tracks I just listened to. Anyways, here is my current WIP. Let me know what I should change or fix. Keep in mind there's been no mixdown yet and I just smacked a limiter on the master!
