Color Tone/Timbre

Post by britotheanna » Fri Feb 22, 2013 8:54 pm

Hello!
I'm working on a paper for my college English class. I'm writing about how different colors could be associated with sounds, and how blending certain colors just right make for the perfect sound. More specifically I'm focusing on "colors" of dubstep. The kind of sound I'm talking about is that which causes overwhelming feelings, makes the hairs on your arms rise, and sends chills through your entire body. That's happened multiple times to me while listening to a good dubstep song.
I've heard this referred to as "spectral coding", "color tone", and "timbre"
If anyone has good information about that, I would be really interested in hearing about it.
Thanks!

So the low frequencies (the bass?) are dark? What about the other sounds in the music? For example, "Starlight" by Flux Pavilion.

What colors would go with this song? And I'm also curious about "I Know the Truth" by Pretty Lights.

Thanks.

Sorry mate, those tracks don't count.

I'd say for the other sounds, the snare is like a yellow flash in the darkness... the hit-hats are like shiny flashing glimmers of metal. The kick drum is warm and muted, so maybe deep orange or brown or green. The effects are all kinds of subtle, iridescent, etheral hues.

I'm confused by what you mean when you say "those tracks don't count"?

I've read all of the posts, but I'm still having trouble understanding why those tracks don't count. Is it because the bass frequencies aren't low enough?

I think he means because that is 'brostep' and doesn't really have much in common with dubstep or many posters interests
