Laptop good enough for producing on?

Post by test_recordings » Sun Feb 24, 2013 5:19 am

I bought a laptop last year because I needed my own computer, kind of regret it now because my mate assembled a supercomputer himself for the same price but I thought I would need the portability. I want to produce and don't want to buy another computer just for the sake of it so I'm going to post the specs here, please give some feedback about whether you think it'd be worth it because I'm considering actually BUYING a DAW :6:

OS - Windows 7
CPU - Intel i7-3610QM
Memory RAM - 8GB (2x4GB)
Sound card - SRS Premium Sound HD

It's alright for documents and stuff but do you reckon it can handle a decent amount to make a track? I want to run Cubase but to honest anything might get put on because it costs a fucking bomb

Dude, you'll be fine! Those are some fine-ass specs for a laptop (which begs the question: how much did it cost? :P).
My scrap-up desktop has less power and runs a pretty decent project in three major DAWs (Reason, Live, FL) with no worries.

Grab a DAW and get producing!
I make sounds with other sounds (and sometimes without)

That will serve you well, the first computer I produced on was a laptop with half of the ram and an intel i5.
Melodic deepness from my mind.

thats exactly why he wanted it for portability. ;-)

People have been making music on much slower machines so I think you'll be fine.

My laptop works just great with 4GB Ram and AMD. That will serve you well {;

If you aren't having any issues then it is good enough right?

Wait until you start using up all your CPU and then start thinking about if its good enough.

I'd rather work that out before and then resolve the issue before it even starts. My mates laptop couldn't quite handle Ableton with 12 tracks of audio and it was a Mac so I get a little worried.

Cubase specs say that's cool though so I think it'll be worth it
