Don't forget, a lot of those dub reggae basslines you feel rather than hear are pitched at E or above, i.e. 41Hz.
The waveform makes a big contribution to the overall harmonic composition, e.g. square waves have no fundamental pitch but the harmonics pattern makes your ears think that it's there. I like saw waves because they have harmonics as well as fundamental.
For your information, the aforementioned bass guitar will have a fat saw wave shape to start with. A lot of metal guitarists fuck up trying to sound heavy by detuning their guitars then applying loads of distortion at the preamplifier - it creates a more square wave-like waveform and so loses the bass-y bit. Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi only tuned the low E to D to play power chords with his severed finger but otherwise he just had a Gibson SG with thick strings, a booster pedal and his VALVE amplifier set to full blast...
