Dubstep on Wikipedia?

Post by cooch » Sun Sep 02, 2007 10:21 pm

I'm a relative newcomer to the scene, and don't have the knowledge to move this one forward...

But can any Wiki savvy dubhead out there bring this page up to date...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubstep

Even with my limited insight it seems short on discography, UK faces, local scenes & venues etc. etc.

Working in Publishing and the media, I know how important Wikipedia can be as a portal to educating and extending Dubstep's profile.

As it stands the entry seems dry and outdated - with some detail about the origins of the scene but little about the here and now.

So come on, dubgeeks - get typing :)

this is a fairly political subject, within dubstep and within the confines of what wikipedia thinks it is for. what do you think the page is missing, specifically?
Keysound Recordings, Rinse FM, http://www.blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com, sub, edge, bars, groove, swing...

jeez, blackdown, I never considered the political ramifications of my post - but isn't Wikipedia what we want it to be, being an open book?

I can't see how it can be contentious to expand the content and attract new listeners...

As for what the entry is missing, I would like to see more details of current UK producers and artists, listings of regular Dubstep nights and venues, an expanded discography, more about FM broadcasting and a reflection of how vibrant the current scene is. Some mention of Leeds, Sheffield, Brighton, Bristol, various parts of London - wherever its kicking off.

So I'm just trying to spread the word, bro -

Can you tell me why this issue is "political", and why my efforts to promote Dubstep through it's Wikipedia page are misguided...

As I have mentioned, I am a newcomer to the scene, whereas you have many posts on this forum.

Am I missing something here... :|

yes you are - it's not political in a scene sense, but in the sense that wikipedia is strictly and efficiently moderated according to its massive list of rules, and the entry has been edited a lot, removing what they took to be irrelevant links, to sites such as blogs and record shops; presumably some of the things you'd like to see there.

so you're not really in a position to judge either way, right? :)

^ thats not what me was saying mate, i dont think he was calling you misguided.

As for updating it, i think the policital thing comes when trying to decide what nights to advertise, when it becomes a place to just advertise your nights etc

also, where do you source the infomation, there are no right and wrong descriptions of the Dubstep scene and important news (like, the invention of the transformer scratch or first single to go gold in Hip Hop) is not as often and therefore there is actually just less to write about.

I dunno though, i'm terrible at writing articles etc

no doubt, but with talk of regular nights and that i'd create the same problems....not to mention there are less regular nights (but still nights which are not as) outside London/Bristol, so we would end up with an untrue representation.

Plus, you need to experience Dubstep, Dubstep music, culture (?) and the scene

wikipedia is not myspace or facebook, and the several stages of that page have shown that very clearly. the reason that page is important is that it's built around people putting in the time and work, and not people looking for the fasttrack to notoriety.
