Following on from the success of our last artist EP from BunZer0, we move into the New Year with a very special project from an original MindStep member. Although his first appearance on the catalogue was on the relatively recent “The Compilation 2012”, Trashbat has been a supporter and extended family member for a long time, and we are very proud to now showcase a collection of original tracks taking in this young producer’s sound.
Growing up with a broad range of influences, from being in a death metal band to early experimentation with drum & bass production, Trashbat’s sound has unquestionably mellowed with age. Fascinated by the depth and texture of sound and influenced by his love of old jazz and movie soundtracks, the tracks on his Koanashi EP are laced with intricate sampling – that pays homage to those musical periods but with evidence of an early era dubstep fascination…

Mutual Point Of View is the overture of this 5 track voyage through the Trashbat sound, where he introduces a musical offering for all to enjoy: spacious swaggering beats and clicks combine with smoky sax, trumpet licks and subtle jazz keys.
The intro of Clear Tides sets the scene with mysterious pads & sultry sax, punctuated by a strikingly emotive vocal sample. Rolling out with swaying percs supported by resonating bass signals and echoing woodwind stabs, this one is for the meditation crew.
Deep thinking vibes and evocative melancholy reflection are apparent in the title track Koanashi, underpinned by soothing, silky keys and stormy shuddering bass – a real treat for the Mind.
Ruminate is a smooth skanker which caresses the listener with warm low end, soft Rhodes, smooth trumpets and Trashbat’s signature sparse, but measured percussive elements.
Orange Skies Of Days Forgotten brings the EP to a close with balmy beach vibes, reminiscent of sun-kissed summer nights: a lovely relaxing riddim and a MindStep team personal favourite!
