Flxmxth - 5 A.M. Dub (Deep/Experimental/Dubby/Relaxing)

Post by Evansmith » Sun Mar 24, 2013 5:47 pm

In this tune I have tried to achieve feeling of early morning, when sun is just starting to appear, the night slowly fades away, and after night of work/party/playing ArmA/whatever really, you just enjoy the view of world waking up.
Soundcloud

On technical side of this track, I'd love somefeedback on mixing. Repetition is not an issue here, it's supposed to drive you to trance-like state, when you're really tired.
I hope you enjoy this :4:

a few ideas/observations:

composition wise, some periods of silence to break it up a little would be nice. note that this is the comment of someone who is sick of the dominance of drones in electronic music atm. i like the incidental sounds though, they really add a lot of depth. long fadeout would be nice too.

as far as the mix goes, the kick needs a good verb to sort out where it's layered in the mix, too forward, too dry; same idea for the pads. while i'm saying that, a general criticism of a lot of the tunes around here is a lack of awareness re: layering and spatial depth and how good reverb can really help you out.

as a result of the punch of your kick it stands out a bit too much (EQ/pitching samples down) and it needs a bit more tail (either through sample choice or reverb) that you could also manipulate (via gating/volume automation) to compliment your rhythm and build more of a dynamic and organic feel. given that the kick is the principal driving element of the second half i think there's a lot of room for you to make it do more work in your track.

listen to the way the kick(s) work spatially in this track:

(if you don't own this album already then do go out, buy it and give it a really thorough listen; there are lessons to be learnt throughout the entire album)
I know you only have one kick going but you can achieve the same kind of dynamic I think.

also re: building a dynamic, perhaps using soft distortion on your sub/complimenting the bassline with overtones. in saying that you've done well with the sub in your mix.

another thing i'd do, while the verb on your snare is nice, i would go with a spring/plate for that proper dub feel, thats just me though. yeah actually disregard that, you're doing fine. some delay + focused EQ would be nice, help it fill up a bit more room.

other than that, keep at it and you've got the opportunity to really make something good with this. :4:

Wow, thank you for your time on this :4:
I will definetely use your advices.
Btw. The tune is squel to mezzanine, as in Gee (probably it was him) said, that mezzanine is like 4am, too early to start a day and too late to finish it.

Really like the vibe mate, interesting chords and a warm sound. Would agree with Shum about the kick at points, maybe some more layering with a deeper pitch/eqing. The snare at around 5.09 works nicely could potentially incorporate it earlier in the tune to give a bit of variation. And nice fat sub!

Think it's a great w.i.p and would love to hear a final version!
