I had just been wondering about this a lot, because i see a lot of bootlegs floating around, but i guess not a lot happens when you do it - the tune i'm working on is by a mainstream artist who is never going to hear it anyway, but i was just wondering if his record label maybe would get in a bad mood.

depends on your level of profile and intention, one of the first tunes I made that got me any notice (in my area) was a garage bootleg of I need a dollar, nothing happened to me. if there's money involved, thats when they'll come down on you

As long as you class it as a bootleg and not a remix you should be fine.

Had a mate that did of booty of a Redlight tune, pretty soon after the track was released (which was a vinyl only release), he sent it to Redlight but Redlight asked him to take it down, which he did. Nothing more than that.
