I still don't know what it is, but judging by this thread it probably doesn't mean much

From wikipedia "the quadratic mean, is a statistical measure of the magnitude of a varying quantity"
We did it in physics in school for AC power. If I remember right UK mains power is 230V RMS but it peaks around 320V. So in an audio context it is basically a number that tells you how loud your track is overall. So you could have a track peaking at 0db but the RMS could be really low as it only peaked at 0Db once when the rest of the track is really low or you could have quite a high RMS if you had a track that was brickwalled at -3Db as the whole track would be very similar in volume the whole way through.
That's a really bad explanation sorry

Re: What do you guys normally get for an average RMS?
You guys are fucking spastics. It was a reasonable query.
Re: What do you guys normally get for an average RMS?
So I presume I shouldn't worry about it? I never have, but I do get kids telling me, don't have your RMS higher than -6....
Re: What do you guys normally get for an average RMS?
Just leave -3 to -6db headroom for the mastering engineer.
Re: What do you guys normally get for an average RMS?
No, what I mean, is when I master, what should my RMS be like... Sorry if I am confusing people :/SKIN E wrote:Just leave -3 to -6db headroom for the mastering engineer.
Re: What do you guys normally get for an average RMS?
Usually average anywhere between -12 to -6 RMS but I try to keep them (my own tracks) at around -10 to -8 RMS

Re: What do you guys normally get for an average RMS?
I think the problem is most of the people in this thread don't really know what RMS is and as usual are just blurting out crap they only half understand (half if I'm being generous) in the first place...I only have a vague idea of what RMS is (whomever posted the stuff from wikipedia...that was about my understanding of it). Therefore, I've stayed away...until now b/c I'm bored.SMOR3S wrote:So I presume I shouldn't worry about it? I never have, but I do get kids telling me, don't have your RMS higher than -6....
From what I understand anything higher than -10 is pretty squashed, but if you are going for the brickwalled / overcompressed sound I dunno how much it matters. Isn't it still going to be subjective in the end? Do what sounds right for each track?

I wouldn't really worry about the master at all... is your room treated?SMOR3S wrote:No, what I mean, is when I master, what should my RMS be like... Sorry if I am confusing people :/SKIN E wrote:Just leave -3 to -6db headroom for the mastering engineer.
Re: What do you guys normally get for an average RMS?
Not really, but I am not releasing anything big atm, so I don't really care if it's not a professional master... My next EP however, ima send off to get done...SKIN E wrote:I wouldn't really worry about the master at all... is your room treated?SMOR3S wrote:No, what I mean, is when I master, what should my RMS be like... I don't find it believable that zomboy has any tracks with an rms of -2db. You must be using that inaccurate meter plugin that was made to trick people into making their tracks quieter to combat the loudness wars... what was it called, tt dynamic range or something? it was just a metering plugin that told you db and rms, tall interface if I'm remembering correctly. I would find it more believable if zomboys tunes were around -6, but i am not familiar with his work

Grab a demo of Fabfilter Pro-L, that'll tell you accurate rms

Re: What do you guys normally get for an average RMS?
I remember a letter in the free magazine 'Tape Op' (which you should ALL be getting!) that read something like this:
I remember hearing a Chase & Status track with some rock guitar in; it was so fucking compressed that on what might be considered the drop, or even a dynamic contrast between soft and loud in rock, it just sounded flat. Waste, in my opinion.
Basically, it was a joke sent in by an engineer sick of people aiming for RMS as close to 0 as possible. Maybe not completely related to OP, but I'd say just make sure your transients are clear while getting it as high as reasonably possible.Hi, we're a deathcore band and we're trying to master one of our tracks but we need help. It's a square wave with an RMS of -0.00000000000001 but how can we make it any louder?

Well I use Ozone 5... If I throw a track in Ableton, how much should I turn it down by, to check?claudedefaren wrote:I don't find it believable that zomboy has any tracks with an rms of -2db. Thanks... I am just trying to understand a bit better... I never used this term before either really, but I have been hearing it a lot lately...test recordings wrote:I remember a letter in the free magazine 'Tape Op' (which you should ALL be getting!) that read something like this:

Ya, I just usually use Ozone's Meter...claudedefaren wrote:in ozone there are several different metering systems you can use. people trying to combat the loudness war will tell you to use k14 or something. i don't recommend it. i don't think it should be on by default though..
