resampling oneshots - am i doing this right?

Post by sloth » Thu Apr 18, 2013 4:31 am

so i've recently been making sounds i like in massive, bouncing them to audio, and then importing them into my sampler to have more fun/automation. some of the on-shots bass sounds i've made are very quiet and when i drag the wav file into my sampler, their super quiet and appear tiny.

my question is whether it is bad practice to bounce out samples very quiet and then just turn up the gain to compensate for their quietness? some of the quietest ones peak at about -18 db, and some of the louder ones peak at -1 db. Should i be trying to bounce at a constant level? idk if it reduces audio quality later on to bounce loud and reduce gain, or bounce quiet and turn up the gain.

If the volume is too low then it could cause problems when raising it again after sample. Just bounce out your samples at like -6 db or something... it can't be that hard to turn the volume up before bouncing to audio.

I always set volume on 0db before bouncing to audio.
Depth is a delusion, the deeper you look the less you see.

Do ^^^ without clipping.

**Also check out your sampler. BY DEFAULT, ABLETON's SAMPLER sets its internal global level to -12 db, regardless of the samples actual db level!!!! It had me scratchin my head in a few sessions until I checked it out. Your individual sound might peak at 0 db, and the samples level in the sampler might be at 0 db, but if its global internal level is not at 0 db, it won't be as loud. :D

Check everything.

And be careful if you increase the level of a sound after it's bounced/exported because you will stsrt to create bits of distortion. If you increae a level past its recorded peak, it becomes unnatural, but hey aometimes you want that
