Does Anyone Use Allpass Filters or Phase Rotators?

Post by SunkLo » Sat Apr 27, 2013 10:34 pm

Bit of a high level tinkery type topic but interesting nonetheless. I've fooled around with phase rotation a bit but never really got the chance to employ it on a track.

Could be useful to tighten up or smear transients or squeeze a bit of RMS out of a bass without upping the peak. There's the uhbik phase plugin which I've used in other contexts to automate phase shifts but never as a static rotator. DMG's Equilibrium has an allpass which does the trick as well.

This kind of looks interesting as well.

Note: I'm not talking about simple delay or phase inversion.

i use the tritone digital one (phasetone?), which can be handy to fix poorly-recorded drums, or to create a bit of width in a sound.

9 times out of 10 though, if you're looking to widen a sound, your basic L-R sample delay sounds better than any of this malarkey.

Not for widening, for a much more esoteric reason. Shaping the transient response or trying to bring sounds forward or back. Kind of one of those intangible mojo effects. Can be used to smear transients apart or rein them in. Kind of like a transparent clipper too.

I tried to build one in Reason using the MClass EQ with two parametric bands cancelling each other out. Kinda got a phasey sound as the filter cut-off point is swept across the spectrum.

Likewise, Betabugs Phasebug (http://www.betabugsaudio.com/plugs.php) is a similar VST plugin which gives a similar sound when using it as an effect rather than for technical reasons. :)

Now that I'm not on my phone and have the time to look at that link, holy shit that looks really good. GUI is sexy too. Marketing is a bit over the top, but still.

The the marketing is a bit off-putting but it's worth a try. I could see it being cool for percussive sound design.

How can a person actually read OPs posts and think that is a relevant response

Interesting plugin, operates using phase rotation, it can add a cool character to sounds run through it. Sounds a bit like the Uhbik phase plugin.
