Re: Maschine...useless?
I am confused as to why you bought maschine without having a need or even really knowing what you would do with it. If your idea of it is useless why did you even get it in the first place.
You definitely don't need a lot of $$$ or gear to make good music. Typically you don't spend your money until you find that there's a problem in your flow that could be fixed with more/specific gear and software.
Keep it simple.
And stop being a twat.

^It is actually a really fucking good point...only buying when you find you need something to expand your horizons...or want something and have a plan for it. But TBH if I had more disposable income, I'd have more music toys for sure...heh

I basically get paid $20/h to run recorded audio through iZotope RX and compress and mix for a small tv show. Not much in terms of hours but I'm slowly building experience that I can use to get more freelance gigs or maybe a job in a studio.
Gonna try my hand at developing vst plugins too. Been messing around all day trying to get some cool sounding algorithms. I've been reading a book on web programming too which is pretty profitable at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to just support myself from home doing random jobs that I enjoy if need be.
I just made a weird transient crusher type thing. It compresses based on transient speed but it's not really a transient shaper. Instead of applying constant gain to transients, it compresses the rate of amplitude change. So it kind of pitch shifts/filters/bit crushes/compresses...

I designed it to be kind of transparent, which it's definitely not hahah. But the release stage is, which is the part with the cool algorithm. I just need to sort out the attack phase. I'm gonna add a lower bound so you can specify the full frequency/speed bounds for the band instead of it just being a hipass. Gonna try to do the opposite after that to sharpen the attacks cause right now it only dulls/crushes them.
Kind of has that MPC feel though... I'm gonna make millions selling it as a Dilla plug since it pretty much only touches your hihats

haha that sounds like some crazy shit. interesting if you came up with your own new type of distortion based on that. seems a bit random but i couldnt even begin to make my own plugs so props dude,SunkLo wrote:Yeah I've been talking to him about it.Eat Bass wrote:try talking to futures untold i know he was developing some plugs he might have some pointers for you to get started.SunkLo wrote:All about the freelance jobs on the side. Re: Maschine...useless?
Yeah I had something going earlier that made a sinewave look like it had thorns on it. Was pretty cool. Turns out it was from a variable resetting to 0 every time a new buffer load of audio came in. Had a nice gentle buzz though. And a bit later I was doing some weird experiments and ended up with a sound mangler. Turned a sine wave into a city skyline on the oscilliscope haha, buncha fuckin squared off building shapes.
I'm gonna try to make things that are actually useful and not just fuckshitup machines but I think there's room for some mojo in standard effect types. It's just cool to think of new ways to accomplish a task or effect. It'll be awesome to understand how things work on a deeper level and be able to implement my own crazy ideas.

This was actually the reason I bought maschine. When I first started producing I was convinced I needed something tactile to make beats on.Coolschmid wrote:I am confused as to why you bought maschine without having a need or even really knowing what you would do with it. As I began to understand what and how maschine is used, I've forced myself to make use of it. I also refuse to sell anything I own (weird personal quirk), so even though I'm not making the most of it I am slowly making it a staple of my arsenal.
Re: Maschine...useless?
I got Maschine for the same reason. I had been programming the beats in with mouse for a while and thought to myself "there must be a better and more intuitive way to do this". So I got all hyped about Maschine and saw all the write ups about how it was streamlining everyone's workflow and how it was simply a joy to use and I just had to have one. Within a month I was back to doing everything with a mouse because in the end I just kept reaching for the damn thing anyway because I was used to it and already pretty fast with it. All Maschine is is a stripped down DAW that you can essentially open in the DAW of your choice, a big sample library, and a midi controller. Its not doing anything revolutionary that I couldn't already do in Ableton. There was no magical boost to my workflow. For guys that used MPC's for years, Maschine might be their first foray into computer aided beat-making, but for the rest of us I think its 500 bucks that could be spent better elsewhere. I suppose if I'd stuck with Maschine it would have eventually replaced the mouse, but doubtful it would have made any great improvements to my workflow, it would have just been a different path to the same destination. In the end, there is no magic bullet to replace the hard work of banging out a decent track.Crimsonghost wrote:This was actually the reason I bought maschine. Re: Maschine...useless?
yeah, selling maschine was the best thing i did with it( spent the money on ewql HS). i was already comfortable with logic/battery when i bought it to sequence drums and write quick ideas but really it tries to be a full DAW on its own (unsuccessfully imo) which kinda gets in the way of using it as a plugin. Also, it feels like a toy.....having said that i miss it for its sampling/chopping workflow. if i was just making hiphop like i used to, it would be perfect

Re: Maschine...useless?
Why the fuck ya'll people buy brand new kit all the time is beyond me. I probably wouldn't pay 500 for it, but got mine as an 'open box' for 265. I think Maschine is great for arranging all the parts of a tune.
I don't see a problem with it trying to be a full DAW (and failing), lets you do a lot of work before you bounce down to audio. For me, it was very worth 265 for a MIDI controller like Maschine that runs on it's own dedicated software rather than fussing around with mapping a MIDI controller--I really think calling it "just a MIDI controller" is a bit off.
It kind of sounds to me like most of you who got pissed about buying Maschine expected it be a magic wand and when you didn't put in the effort to incorporate it into your workflow decided it was worthless. Of course it's not going to be magic. I'm not calling anyone out in particular, but you have to learn how to read reviews and put the time into learning new gear.
It's fine if you want to arrange with a mouse, but don't call out Maschine as being worthless because you couldn't integrate it into your workflow. Shame on you for reading shit like Music Radar and buying into hype ;p
Not to mention there are all kinds of cool live possibilities sequencing external gear, running audio out of Maschine to a mixer etc. You could easily run Maschine in stand alone and rock an awesome live PA. Also, sampling, layering and resampling is a breeze in Maschine and all you need is the provided software (maybe a 3rd party compressor).

Ill give that the sequencer is a bit different. Took me a week or so of using Maschine in standalone to get the hang of it. Id recommend maschine newbies try building and finishing whole tracks in Maschine to learn it.sigmund floyd wrote:i agree that what you can do with it live is pretty dope....i could just never get used to its sequencer for producing

This is what I'm been focusing on lately and it's much better then trying to use it as a plug. Get your track down then get it into your daw for finishing touches.fragments wrote:Ill give that the sequencer is a bit different. On the other hand, I've gotten a lot of really cool samples by just recording 8 outs (one for each Maschine group) straight into my daw. Just hit record and go to town for 20min or so.
I think thats becoming my favorite thing about it, I can get a lot of sounds or patterns that I wouldn't think of with programming or using a midi keyboard.

Re: Maschine...useless?
obvious troll thread 0/10 but for the sake of a good piece of kit --
maschine is a great softsampler with a dedicated midi controller and sequencer. The controller is also easy to use with kontakt kits, battery kits, and many other softsamplers.
It's a favorite for people who like to make beats on the fly/live, but I use to to write almost all my drums in the studio, as well as for resampling/chopping other elements such as melodies, breakbeats, pads, big hits/impacts, and SFX/incidentals. then I track each pad to its own audio channel via Maschine's multi-outputs.
..... useless? i don't think so
