nice new [ 4.9.13] concise RT interview with 'Jeffrey M. Smith, GMO researcher from the Institute for Responsible Technology'

[Previous March ]

http://rt.com/usa/monsanto-march-protests-world-069/

An international protest planned for later this month against biotechnology company Monsanto is slated to span six continents and include demonstrations in dozens of countries around the globe.

Monsanto, a titan of the emerging biotech industry, has come under attack from environmentalists, agriculturalists and average consumers over the company’s conduct in the realm of genetically-modified organisms and genetically-engineered foods. Despite research on the effects of GMO crops being largely considered inconclusive, Monsanto has lobbied hard in Washington and around the globe to be able to continue manufacturing lab-made foods without the oversight that many have demanded.

Why do we march?

Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors, infertility and birth defects.

In the United States, the FDA, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-led research on the long-term effects of GM products.

Recently, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that, among other things, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds.

For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism. Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup.

Monsanto's GM seeds are harmful to the environment; for example, scientists have indicated they have contributed to Colony Collapse Disorder among the world's bee population.

What are solutions we advocate?

Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.

Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.

Repealing relevant provisions of the US's "Monsanto Protection Act."

Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.

Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication, grassroots journalism, social media, etc.

Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto's secrets.

Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won't take these injustices quietly.

We will not stand for cronyism. We will not stand for poison. That’s why we March Against Monsanto.

"The food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison."

For those that eat Chicken & eggs...

M&S, Co-op and Sainsbury's say chickens will be fed on GM soya

As three more supermarkets drop their bans, the industry is accused of caving in to cartels and GM food giants

http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2 ... ns-gm-soya
Britain's supermarket giants have been accused of caving in to the genetic modification lobby by dropping their decade-long stance against selling chickens fed on genetically modified crops.

The move has been seen as a key victory for GM food giants such as Monsanto which, environmental groups claim, will benefit from the switch. It is also being seen as a precursor to the introduction of GM meat and poultry by "softening up" consumer resistance to the controversial technology.

t has emerged that Marks & Spencer, the Co-operative and Sainsbury's are following Tesco, Asda and Morrisons and reversing policies that prohibit their suppliers from feeding GM soya to chickens used in the production of their own-brand eggs and poultry. The move came following fierce lobbying from groups such as the National Farmers Union and the British Poultry Council.

Environmental groups warned that there would be consumer protests if non-GM options were removed. "The supermarkets should stand up for their customers and secure long-term contracts for all their non-GM food and feed supplies," said Dr Helen Wallace of the campaign group GeneWatch UK, which is critical of the GM lobby. "If access to non-GM feed for chickens is allowed to be blocked today, how long before we have no choices left?

"People have a right to choose what food they want to eat and we must guard against corporate interests, cartels and monopolies taking over global food and feed supplies."

It is pointless to protest they have always done what they want...just do what you can and inform your friends and look after your family and buy locally farmed products...there's always a stall near you I pop down the road and get all my veg and fruit from one, I avoid eating a huge variety of things now

Watch Food Matters...excellent documentary

Never let me hear you speak like that again :P

It's anything but pointles. Massive international groups of people marching for a cause is more than just informing your freinds, it's informing the wholey uninformed ,albeit mostly apathetic public.

Of course Monsanto will wriggle ,lie and bribe it's way out of what ever come's it's way, but they've trod on too many people and been too bait about all the seedy shit they have been up to so i can't see the whole monsanto being brushed aside or ignored.

I wait for the day people have the shared epiphany of realising the world and all life on it is a single global organism and when we live in harmony with it can actually accelerate our physical, mental and emotional evolution far beyond what we can currently imagine. I don't mean harmony in a vague spiritual sense either, just in terms of actually utilizing the intelligence we know we have to manage the needs of the world.

As a Global population, we are intellectual 'giants' and emotional infants and we've gotten so used to the imbalance we don't even notice there is one.

Each one-teach one!

^^^ I wouldn't wait for anything, get on it yourself!

Consumers can protest, by just not buying it. UK people especially, they just complain and carry on as if it can't be helped :?

Boycott Supermarkets.

Stock up on raw ingredients from markets and indie health food shops and cook your own food, rather than buying any pre-made shit.

Good example - pasta sauces. How hard it is to chop and onion, some garlic and open a tin of tomatoes? Salt, pepper and basil, little bit of chilli if you're that way inclined.... What the fuck is the point in Dolmio? For the same price as a jar of dolmio you can make a shitload of tomato sauce which can be frozen.

etc.

Consumer end of international business is so wasteful and ridiculous. People really need to change their habits. Fuck Tescopoly and their ilk.

I don't do Facebook so I guess I'll be walking around Sydney with my bowl of soup
and t-shirt with the crossed picture of Santa + "FOOD POISONER" underneath.
I figure the more spread out we are, the better.
But if I get arrested as a Christmas-hating terrorist, well, it should be fun in court.
