Jay-Z's music didn't do the film any favour either, it's about the age of JAZZ ffs, if they worked so hard on the settings, costumes etc why not just play good old jazz songs ? I think you should go see it for yourself but don't have crazy expectations
You read the book?
I thought Carey Mulligan was one of the better things about it. Tobey Maguire was meh as was DiCaprio.

The anachronistic music i didn't mind so much, it worked better with some songs than others: the Emeli Sande - Crazy In Love cover was decent, but Flux Pavillion - I Can't Stop was a step too far.

Visually yeah it was fucking gorgeous if a bit obvious. Luhrmann seems to have sacrificed any subtlety for the visual extravagance. Missed out some crucial bits near the end as well.
Yeah I read the book which led me to more novels from Fitzgerald, hence my comment on shallowness: the book and the previous film were a wonderful and realistic description of 1920s high society and people. And while I agree that visually the new film is really great (you can tell it's from the same guy as Moulin Rouge), when it's time in the second half for more depth of character and psychological development the film doesn't really take off. I saw the 1974 version right after going to the cinema and while the setting was less in-your-face, the character of Gatsby with all its mystery and snobism was much better described (maybe because it's Redford)... I blame Hollywood effect

Hadn't seen this in years, proper jokes film. Downey mid drug-binge, big hair, great soundtrack and Kato & Dr Kelso going at one another

Star Trek Into Darkness

A lot of CGI. Slightly superior to the first movie imho which I really hated because of the time travel plot (yeah I know we've had the discussion before). All in all, it's just more summer cgi blockbuster stuff that in the end is quite brainless.

I'm not sure how i've never seen this before and now I feel like i've been missing out all these years. Absolutely amazing film - nothing has drawn me in as much as this did in maybe 8 or 10 years! It's just so good!
The first half had my skin in an almost permanent state of goosebumps and that hasn't happened to me in donkeys years.
This fucking guy.
Image
The fear thankfully started to subside around the time of the Henry Rollins and Lieutenant Gruber (from 'Allo, 'Allo) cameos but the intrigue continued to increase. Who did what? Is this real or a dream? Is she dead? Who or what is the mystery man?
Classic Lynch (creepy set design, lighting, soundtrack, style) but, imo, with a more Noir edge to it.
Loved it and Patricia Arquette was very well cast in this.

This film has easily shot up into my top 20 films of all time! 10/10 :P:
ON IT

Thanks for this!

Yeah, this was acceptable popcorn fodder but nothing special at all.

Wes Anderson really is amazing when he's on form. Even better than The Royal Tenenbaums.

The most riffed movie besides The Room got a sequel that is even worse than the original with a higher budget for shit CGI and bad plots even when it comes to z grade movies

I've always felt 'Lost Highway' was painfully overlooked, up there with Lynch's best, imo. The only problem I have with it is the nu-metal soundtrack.
