I almost did with Atlantis but someone told me how to access the presets and it worked, so I didn't. Since Synth1 is working and the presets that came with it are working I feel like things are loaded okay but I'm not doing something that needs to be done in order to get the new presets to work. Some day...Electric_Head wrote:I also use Reaper with those same synths without any issues.

Have you considered reinstalling the synths?

Ok seriously OP, i dont want to sound like like a complete dick (only maybe a chubby), but if you spent half as much time trying to make music and understand how synthesis works as you have on this forum asking silly questions (wobbeboss? really?) you would have something significant to show by now.
Seriously, stop worrying about silly presets and start tweaking knobs. Youll get a LOT more positive response if your making an attempt at learning how to use your tools opposed to relying on someone else's work to use them for you.

Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
I want to do both. That seems like the best overall approach to me. That being the case, I intend to continue trying to get good presets. Why don't you ever use any presets? Have you made such a huge and extensive group of them yourself that you'll never want to use one made by someone else? Even if you have, I don't want to become such an extremist even if I eventually do learn to make whatever sound I want, though if that time ever comes I might feel differently. Going on with it, if/when I do learn to make my own sounds I'll probably hear sounds which are other people's presets that I want to create something similar to, and sometimes I might want to use other people's presets and adjust them. From what I've read that's an acceptable thing to do, and I've even seen a few people say they would allow using some presets as they are. All of this brings me back to still wanting to get MORE presets that people think are good for dubstep....or at least that I would. And having some downloaded already I'd like to learn how to use them to see what I think, and also that would make me able to use more in the future. So I STILL want to be able to do it. One more thing. I talked to a guy the other day who does some electronic music stuff and we discussed this topic. He said that sometimes by the time he fiddles with and adjusts things to get the sound he wants he forgets exactly how he wanted to use it. I'm making a document and listing sounds like fuzzy or boingy or harsh or whatever might help me find a sound when I do try to put an idea down so that doesn't happen. How do you do that? Even if you only use presets you make yourself it seems you'd have to have a way of keeping straight what's what.Crimsonghost wrote:Ok seriously OP, i dont want to sound like like a complete dick (only maybe a chubby), but if you spent half as much time trying to make music and understand how synthesis works as you have on this forum asking silly questions (wobbeboss? really?) you would have something significant to show by now.

Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
Yes. I want to eventually use symphonic and marching sounds as well and would like to learn to put dubby effects on horns and animal sounds if possible, but to start with I want to learn to use what's already available and am having enough trouble trying to do that. In another forum I learned that the key to this thing with Synth1 has to do with the opt button and I got it to change folders, but still don't have control because I don't know exactly what to do in what order to get control over the situation. Hit opt and then "Change Folder Path" and then choose the folder and hit OK... but there must be something more I'm missing because it doesn't always work and now it looks like I've got more than one folder going at a time and it seems that some of the presets or entire folders are entered more than once, so how to undo that? I guess I'm a little closer than I was though, and some of these new presets sound great imo.Artie Fufkin wrote:lol @ using the word 'extremist' when talking about creativity.

Meanwhile if you can suggest some good things to use to put effects on accoustic samples like horns I'd like to try playing with that a bit too.

Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
Honestly, every track i make gets a fresh set of sounds. Its just the way i like working. The only time i might use a preset is if im looking for something to layer over another sound or if i need something as filler, which ill usually change out later. Thats just me though.nopEda wrote:I want to do both. That seems like the best overall approach to me. That being the case, I intend to continue trying to get good presets. Really, its your decision. Im sure theres some adage here about teaching you how to grow your own veggies or some shit like that, but im not much for proverbs.
Also, why are you so deadset on Synth1? Theres plenty of other free synths that are much better imo. Anything from Togu Audio, Curve2 CM, Synthmaster CM, the list goes on.
Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
Speaking of Synth1, I just downloaded the VST yesterday. Since I'm in Garageband I have to use a VST-to-AU wrapper for it. It loads up in Garageband as it should, but it can't seem to actually produce any sound. Anyone know how to fix this? I need to make some reeses ASAP.

Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
All the preset packs I've used work just fine for me. You don't even have to extract them.
Synth1 Folder -> zipbank -> put your zipped or rar'd packs in there
start up daw, load up an instance of synth1, click in the box where it says 'initial sound', click on the box w the plus sign to the left of 'external (zip)' and select your pack
If you want to learn about 'dubby' effects maybe go here

Don't listen to these people...
Use presets if you want, I -know- FM, RM and Subtractive synthesis like the back of my hand but do I put it to use? rarely..
I ain't got time to sit there and faff around with creating patches.. Are people going to care if you have a rhodes in your track what sounds pretty standard? Not really.. Are people going to moan cause you're using a super saw pad? No sir-y.
Sure, learn it but its NOT ESSENTIAL TO WRITE GOOD MUSIC.. In fact most perfect music whats been created in this world has been from guitars, drums, bass guitars. Sure, there might be some FX peddles and post-processing gone on in the recording (which is mainly how I get my sounds, sounding less-bland!) but just find YOUR way of writing music..
The amount of tracks what have just a simple bell synth in them, sure the bell is all pretty similar but its how its played, what reverb and delay you put on it and the context of the other sounds in the track what make it yours..
Here is a whole heap of banks http://www.kvraudio.com/product/synth1- ... /downloads

I don't know if this could help in your situation, but someone told me about the initsettings.exe program. It's in the Synth1 folder somewhere. After running it mine started running the presets just fine, but until then it didn't seem to recognise them.Harkat wrote:Speaking of Synth1, I just downloaded the VST yesterday. I have Synth1 and read that there are good dubstep preset packs for it, so I wanted to check it out. I'm glad I did too. Are there some good ones available for some of those other synths that you know of?Crimsonghost wrote: Also, why are you so deadset on Synth1? Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
Thank you for that! That's pretty much how I was thinking. So far I've only even attempted one dubsteppy idea and it's lame and not even a quarter of a song. But! It is a beginning and I feel like I should learn to make some music with what is easily available before trying to get into hard details of trying to create sounds from scratch. Instead I'm trying to list them in a document in a way that I can go back and find particular sounds when I get an idea. Do you do something like that? If not, how do you keep track of how to find stuff?legend4ry wrote:Don't listen to these people...

+1...in the last six months I stopped worrying about sound design and the super technical stuff and just concentrated on arrangement and writing music. WRITING MUSIC.legend4ry wrote:Don't listen to these people...

Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
Now I've installed a newer version 1.12. It had no presets listed in the dropdown menu but I remembered from before to run the initsettings.exe program. After running that it now shows one preset. The first one. In the older version it showed all of them, and then a bunch of "initial sound". In the newer version it doesn't have a bunch of spots (whatever they are) that say initial sound if that has something to do with itElectric_Head wrote:I also use Reaper with those same synths without any issues.

Every single inch of this "music" "journey" so far has kicked my ass!!! (maybe that should be my sig)

Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
I still can't get version 1.12 to open the ones that came with it. Well, it seems to acknowledge the first one in folder 00, but none of the others. I ran the initsettings.exe a couple of times and reg2ini.exe a couple of times. When I run it now a message says it has already been run and APPDATA\Daichi\Synth\synth1.ini already exists. That's all I've been able to find people saying to do. I've been Googling and asked in some other forums, but still haven't found out what I'm missing.
Re: Good dubstep presets for Synth1?
Just throwing this out there, I have actually learned a lot about synthesis from studying/deconstructing presets... the two don't necessarily have to be antithetical to each other. Also honestly I don't see the difference between using samples and using presets, it all depends on how you use them... and just because you use one or two presets in a track doesn't mean that you automatically don't understand synthesis or that you can't use them in creative ways
