Bump. XB1 is officially ass and anyone who still wants to buy one after learning this new information should be ashamed.
I don't really give a shit about these details. Retailers are essentially selling the same game over and over at near retail prices these days with the second-hand market - and publishers don't see cent one. M$ were pressured to address the issue and they've tried to develop a system where whatever happens, you can only place your scorn on the publishers.

I'm more concerned about the vast amount of data M$ can collect from me (including some potential big brother type shit with always on kinect) and double-dipping by reselling it to advertisers.
They didn't have to address shit. What did Nintendo address? Nothing. What did Sony address? Nothing, as far as we know. It's really just a blatant erosion of consumer rights. What happens to Gamefly? Redbox? Ebay? Craigslist? Game stores that aren't Best Buy or Gamestop? Handing someone a disk and saying "play this game"?

No other industry has this bullshit delusion where they think they're entitled to getting paid for the same product twice. You don't see book publishers getting mad at libraries or used book shops for existing or record labels getting pissed off at Discogs.

Yeah, the Xbox One looks terrible. The surveillance issues, the charging you for every single thing, the lack of games, the terrible name. Microsoft can do one.

Pretty sure that technically, you've never owned a game. It's not your property you've bought a license to use it, that for practical reasons was a physical copy. They're just taking it to the next level; probably pressured by devs (think about it... they lose a lot of money through used game sales - it was going to game shops instead, despite the fact they haven't made the product). I reckon the PS will do this as well tbh. It's an inevitable thing.

It's also surely not an erosion of consumer rights... have you ever bought a used mp3?

If devs can push consoles into doing it they will, why wouldn't they!

EDIT: not saying I'm over the moon about it btw, just that it probably will become normal

Well with all the Xbone announcements about TV and used games, I'm glad to see Microsoft is finally pushing for PC gaming :6:

what difference is there between the "download games and only play them when on this xbox" model and the model that steam uses?

is there one?

None, with the exception of Steam having good pricing and other features.
There's a pretty good piece comparing the two here http://www.polygon.com/2013/6/7/4406170 ... ade-policy
Explains why they're trying to emulate things like Steam, but doing it wrong.

Well steam users can download the games on their account to any computer as long as they are logged in on that computer....but I see what you are saying. I don't really see the problem since I don't tend to buy more than a couple of console games in a year. The only reason I own an Xbox is to play FIFA against my mates anyway :P

It seems there is the option to gift games you have bought on your 360 account to friends on your friendslist, but I am not sure if that means you can both own the game at the same time (probably not)

Other features won't bother me BUT they are annoying as sometimes you won't be able to get online if your ISP is down or whatever. The always online thing shouldn't really be a problem however
I don't know what this Kinect thing is all about though and I don't like the idea of being forced to be connected to the internet all the time whilst simultaneously being forced to have a camera pointing at my face while I rage at losing to some random 12 year old on a football video game....

Yea the online requirement and kinect requirement brings out the tin foil hat in me.
It's like a dream for data miners, big corporations and organizations like the MPAA, and could be used by homeland security under the patriot act to spy on suspects.

normally I would say "don't be silly" but with what's been coming out this week I wouldn't say that that's a ridiculous statement at all.

You can actually play Steam games offline, for one. Steam's DRM model also does not apply to all games, it is an option that's decided on a per-publisher basis. The real problem is for disc based games.
