Monitors vs Speakers

The last 4 years I've used my technic seperates and speakers to produce on just to get a ear and basic practice

I've now bought some £40 monitors , sounds much more controlled if i can say around low ends which is nice ..

I will in a month or so move up to some very nice monitors it seems the way to go right ..??

I'd like to know though the real reasons between the both of them and what they actually do for production ..

Monitors are considered flat frequency response, so think of it like an EQ...
Decent monitors will have no EQ, so what you hear is what you have.
More commercial speakers will have desirable frequencies boosted, so you enjoy the music more and think the speakers are awesome.

For production you want flat response so you get a better representation of what frequencies are actually in your music.

Arguably, the more you pay, the better the monitors.

flat eq is an arguable term. soundonsund had a comparison between different monitors. none of them had flat eq. krks had a big cut in 750hz area. room treatment and speaker placement is far more important. as with every speaker, ear training is important.
quality music can be created with almost every speaker as log as you know what they deliver.

flat EQ was a simile. So someone who hasn't dealt with monitors can understand that they try to reproduce exactly what frequencies are in your music.

nice 1 , is a nice way of puttin it , the first thing i noticed was that the sound was very flat , almost like it needed boosting in certain parts of the song , which worried me as they are very cheap monitors , briliant sound dont get me wrong very clear and on listening back on certain tracks arguments i had with myself with samples etc the monitors really boought out those frequencys for me to cut out ..

I've read alot about differences, alot of people say monitors have helped their mixes . defo am starting to notice my ear be drawn to certain parts of frequencys that my ear didnt prior..?

im guessing the better the monitor aswell the louder the sound ? mines only 30watt but so loud :/ also so tight sounding i did give those old speakes a battering with mixing lol

I agree about it doesnt matter about speakers etc , im trying to use my headphones as referance as apposed to a speaker so to speak ,, i duno is early days so just training my ear and seeing where the finishing product will end up as said before hopefully will sound better ..

you need to read a bit more about speakers, watts and sensitivity.
quality 30W monitors will not sound louder as your current 30w setup, but will handle loudness better since quality components being used: amps don't heat as much (if active=self powered), speakers do not bomb out, low distortion etc.
i think for bedroom producing 30w is enough. if you plan to throw a party with them, then consider more powerful speakers.
