i think that the future of music is in hands of the production program developers. depending on what new effects and synths they create the new genres are going to follow that direction

people still make dope records with old versions of fruity and reason though

I'm sure some more 15 year old pill heads will pull off some groundbreaking shit again. Just that the record shop will be out of the picture

moreso than new kit, we just need to make sure the good drugs are still available.

Amps, synths, samplers, electric guitars etc all shaped how music evolved.

London has a style and energy like nowhere else, people might be able to spread ideas quicker around the world now but that wont stop places having their own innovation and scenes.

yeah this is something I've thought too

with the Internet, soundcloud, etc you'll never get small little isolated scenes popping into existence ever again. No more tight knit communities coming up with something special of their own. What I think really sucks about that is that small little scenes will never develop their own unique culture (imposed by the fact that the people are geographically clustered together), and will instead just end up as a boring, globalized hodge podge.

And that's why I think there hasn't really been anything interesting to come out of dance music since dubstep either

What Harkat said also describes how I feel pretty well

music doesnt necessarily have to be from just one area to begin with imo though, especially in light of the internet. you could have global underground scenes that are unique and have their own special culture, few like-minded individuals from around the globe doing their own thing and seeing how it goes. lol, it is a dreamy prospect I know, but even when I try to find someone to do with music I more often than not connect with people from outside the UK

especially with communication barriers decreasing by the day, this seems more and more plausible

I'm so fucking jealous of the ninjas on here that got to experience this kind of music without all the politics and weird distance that comes from hearing it from the internet.
I agree. But the bit in bold is most likely nostalgia making it seem lot better than it was.

I wrote and deleted a bunch of posts that probably took the whole evolution of species/culture analogy too far and now I'ma make myself guilty of quoting Jurassic Park of all movies, but just like "life" finds a way, so does culture. And the strive for people to. We're still the same people we were 20 years ago. I doubt much as has changed in our fundamental nature and part of our fundamental nature is to create smaller sub groups, or "sub cultures" where a more restricted group of people are 'in the know'. This 'need' isn't gone, but without the non-interconnectedness of a world without the internet, that has become harder and it's up to technology to enable that again.

Maybe with the increased need for individualism and privacy on the internet, web services will cater to that, or you'll get other more restricted areas of the internet that'll only be accessible through something like Tor. And there, a small group of people can exchange ideas and flesh them out.

It would be the same just, just not focused around physical location as much as web location.

But clubs are local.... they're still around, internet doesnt change that. It's club music, plenty of people into it never check forums or find their music via youtube and soundcloud, especially in a city like London with record shops and 100's of club nights- how could that not influence new music? I'm sure people around the world can hear it and copy quicker now, but unless they have the crowds going to clubs its not gonna be the same scene and development. You'd still hear a new tune for the first time in a club in London

When people get involved in the game locally, they meet face to face with people, that brings everyone closer together and helps build a vibe for a scene.
So no, I seriously doubt that dubstep will be the last genre (type?) to emerge from London, or anywhere for that matter.
The dubstep that is popular now isn't even the dubstep that kick started the whole thing. So there's that too.

But what people wanna hear, what club goers go out to dance to, isn't just local. It's local, mainland Europe, Canadian, Australian, etc. And those crowds over there pick up on the same shit. The DJ's crowd isn't just in some South London basement now, it's worldwide. Sometimes literally with like Boiler Room.

People still go to clubs to hear music and check face to face, but what people wanna hear and what PRODUCERS CHOOSE TO MAKE isn't as much about just that crowd anymore. It used to be that if DJ Rap played out your dubplate, you were a star. Now you are if you have a million youtube views.

The crowd still exists, London's crowd is just no longer the sole deciding factor in what makes or breaks a track.

Yeah man, Footwork. The way I see it, that's Kode being very smart and digging out the last pocket of isloated, pure dance music culture. Maybe Donk over in wiggans will last a while longer.
