140bpm Neuro/Dubstep track, desperately requiring feedback.

Post by KindredSpirit » Thu Jun 27, 2013 8:43 pm

Hi all

Haven't posted in excess of a year due to hermitting away as usual - this time tailoring my sound toward more of a neurohop/funk direction.

This is the first track that I've been happy with in a while as I've managed to combine many key elements which I've learned while developing this style. It resonates nicely with me but as I have little to no fan base to speak of I'd love to get some kind of feedback from the DSF public.

Soundcloud

Thanks to anyone who reads this. :D

-KS

EDIT: For now I want to keep this tune private so you may have to click the URL under the player to view the track.

I like it mate, I think you should set it loose on the public, don't be shy ! :D

I am not a big fan of intros in general and usually skip them but I liked your buildup and went back to have another listen.
Great job on trying something completely different - the plucked string (what instrument is that ?) sounds really nice to me.

I would be interested to know what it sounds like without the sample hits, (the ding and wip kind of ones). The overall sound is a quite mysterious but these samples are almost cartoon like. This might be the sound you are trying to achieve, so feel free to ignore! The mix down might need a little playing around with, but this is WIP so don't worry about that.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the comprehensive feedback matey, I really appreciate that.

The overall vibe I was aiming for is somewhere in the middle of reso & culprates current-ish work (with evident KOAN influences, can't be helped!). I understand there are some samples used (such as the distinct lazer zips/zaps) which harbor a somewhat inappropriate sound when you consider the dark nature of the synths, but I deemed them most effective for me to achieve the snappy rhythmic flow - I may have a play around with other sounds to replace them with for your benefit if you think it's crucial, but aside from cowbells I'm a little lost for ideas!

Anyways again thanks for the feedback, really helpful to have some input!

oh and briefly with regards to the intro, I may extend it by 8 bars or so just to play out the melody a little more. I feel there isn't enough space and everything's all clustered!

EDIT: I have now done this so the intro is currently as it should be. Still open to suggestions though.

Reading it back it didn't come across quite as I meant. The samples add a lot of character, I was just curious how dark and moody the track would be without them. I am too used to listening to the same old generic dubstep, you are trying to do something new and the hits should definitely stay as they define the sound.

I add similar stuff to songs too :) and agree they are needed for flow (this is not as good as your song):

Cheers for the follow-up. In future when using dark sounds such as these I'll work toward keeping the overall vibe dark so's not to confuse.

Interesting ideas in this track of yours dude, I like your beat structure a lot. One thing I would personally pull you up on is your usage of synths - perhaps steer away from weak LFO driven bass synths (a la Rusko, etc - can't stand the timbre!) and perhaps focus toward replicating reese basslines -- it would suit you to have an un-synced synth alongside the off drums as it'll add swing and not sound disjoined like the synced LFO. Anyways just my 2 cents!

Again, thank you so much for the feedback.

Update - drastically revamped much of the sound. Have fiddled endlessly with the mix and at present it is currently sounding a lot clearer than previous versions.

Also uploaded the entire mix as opposed to first two mins. Any/all feedback welcome - constructive criticism encouraged!
