Picking out my first real DAW/Dj info

Post by R3b_Official » Sun Jun 30, 2013 12:22 am

Ok so here is my problem. As you know most producers very suldum buy all there hardware upfront. Ive played around and download full and demo versions of most daws. So here is the dilemma. Ive been using ableton for the past couple months with various other plugins and its 400 for the suit the last time i checked. I recently saw online you could buy reason 7 for 299 being a student or teacher. Should i save my money and get ableton and slow build my plugins database the honest way or should i go and buy full reason 7 at a cheaper price. Im in highschool and i dont have much source of income. I have about 700$ saved up for a car and other expenses from birthday and christmas money. Hopefully i can get a job being 16 but my being an immigrant, my status in the us for being here for 14 years, i still dont have citizenship or a green card(very long story). Im south african but white as a fun fact. Anyway which is your honest opinion on what i should do? FL studio is relatively cheap and has good plugins but im working on my mac right now as my main computer and its an old macbook from 2008. My younger brother (litte bastard) uses the pc for video games and is on 24/7. Mind you hes 10 and is very argumentative so i cant take him off there at all. Im not making money from my production and learning a new daw such as reason would take a bit getting use too but has some crazy instruments! Also sorry abou making this long but i just remember i want to start Djing soon too try make some money on the side, theres not a lot of good djs in my area and this will get me well know in my school and sorta break away of being a close together shy person and brake away to a confident, crazy party animal doing sets for parties relatively cheap. Any advice with hardware and copyright stuff? Or general stuff aswell?

*Sidenote: I have done a lot of research into what i want and not a complet dits. If you have anything infromative to say that be awesome and much apreeciated! If not leave and have a nice day :W:. Thanks for reading all this junk and need help with anything shoot me a message i know a bit of stuff between a lot scopes of music! Thanks and have a nice day!

Not sure if your keyboard has one of these but I try to hit it every so often:

As for what daw to get, Reaper.

Tell your brother to stop being a little shit. Beat him if you have to, you're bigger.

Being a DJ isn't going to give you social skills, sorry. It's not like some Lindsay Lohan Disney movie type plot in real life. It might give you some more opportunities to socialize, but an awkward socially inept DJ is still awkward and socially inept. Although I may be overestimating the intelligence of young females and underestimating the influence of alcohol, so your mileage may vary.

A) props for at least posting this in the right subforum, and
B) +1 on Reaper, bigtime. There is literally no need to spend hundreds and hundreds right out the gate, and Reaper can do anything any producer needs.

I saw you mention student/teacher discount. Ableton has that as well. Check their site. But Reaper is a great DAW. I've used it quit a bit.

@Sunklo yes i do see^ ahah but i understand what you ment though. Its not going to dramatically change me. Its more of trying to be social and outgoing. Im not an awkward person but i think i could be little more umm hyped? Im cool at parties but i dont go like buck wild like some people, but I dont wanna go down that road were its all about plur and neon lights everywhere, trippin space balls.... No thanks. Ill see what happens, i need to get some PAs though.

You don't have to be 'buck wild'.

I'm awfully introverted and would much rather sit down and talk tech over a few beers with my best mate or just sit at home and do whatever than be around 9482390482390 absolutely stnuc who the only thing I relate to them with is location and associations.

Though, when I step up to the decks and pull out my first vinyl - I let loose like a mad man, that is my place where I feel comfortable - I don't even play to the crowd, if they are clearing the dance floor by the second I still vibe off what I'M playing, get excited over hearing those crazy new blends I find and test out my new tracks against huge systems, it honestly is like church for me..

Then afterwards I just awkwardly slide through the crowd and go sit in the smoking area for the remainder of the night and sip beers, talking to the odd person who comes up to me and says good set and leave after ive drunk my free drinks and got paid. (after thanking the promoters for having me of course!! NOTHING worse from being a promoter for a while when a DJ thanks you for handing him money not thanks you for thinking he was the best person out of EVERYONE who DJs, to play your night - take note!).

Point being : You shouldn't DJ just 'because' - you should have a fire and a passion to share and play the music YOU love to other people. Don't be one of those soulless DJ who only play for non-music related benefits that come with it..

On the DAW side : Reaper is cheap (I think its like 50$ for a license? I believe they even do education discounts too?) and its very capable to do anything any of the other major DAWs can do (some of the stuff - miles better!).

Yeah I've been around my share of drunk people and have analyzed them thoroughly while on mushrooms many times. I remember being attracted to that over the top act when I was highschool aged but you become disenchanted with it pretty quickly. No point in having to endure talking to a bunch of obnoxious dickheads just for the sake of being social. Those interactions are never genuine anyway and cripple your ability to have authentic connections with people. I find you meet a lot more cool cats by being chill. And they're the kind of people you'll want to hang out with the next morning as well.

So yeah, like ledge said, DJ for the fun of it, not to impress some double digit IQ bitches making duckfaces.

Some really good advice guys, thanks. I get were both of guys coming from and i would want to Dj for the sake of having a blast and going a bit crazy, not really to be wasted or whatever. Im not into doing anything over the top. Ive smoked a couple times and chewed tabacco. Made me way more relaxed but at the same time out going and whatever. I do it for more an anxiety thing.

My post didnt post some how but i said before thats how i am ^ rather chill with a few good friends than be at a party anyday. But needs to be balance between being a chill dude and awesome guy to hangout with. Im a bit too laid back if you ask me. Djing would let me express my self and let go plus let me be more social even if its with moronic people. I think i have the opportunity in my aera to be well known and share my taste in music, i havent herd any producers or Djs that are some backwoods ghetto kids. I live by miami side but more north by the beach so the people are chill and crazy.

Thanks guys for the advice! I would love to something with my life with music or inventing something. Ive got couple good ideas. My parents would disagree doing anything with music and would want me to do something lame and "work at the bottom" of a company and work my way up for 10 years. I just cant do that in me. I want to actually do something and leave my mark when i die wether it be with music or a company that makes something. I forgot who said this but its something i live by. After im dead i rather have people ask why i have no monument than why i have one.

Thanks for the great advice guys! I just need some how get some money to buy my PAs and mixer. Parents wouldnt let me spend any of saved money on anything really....

Yea, but now you are jumping into any thread you can find where the members you are arguing with have posted and messing with them. Do what you will, I'm staying out of it...I've said my peace.
