Ehh even 'underground' there's too much bullshit and while underground rappers CLAIM to be about 'forward thinking', 'forward thinking' itself is in a box with rules. Deltron 3030 is considered 'progressive hip-hop done right' but it's still just beats and rhymes and B-boy posturing. Sounds like a Wu-Tang record with different sample sources and subject matter, but the same formula. I like the record a lot, but it doesn't stack up to forward thinking music in metal, rock and electronic music from that same time period (come on, Godspeed You! Black Emperor? Sunn0)))? Venetian Snares?)

The Native Tongues' crew's music is dope, but it's still very conservative music with a nod to the past (and I don't like Afrocentricism, I think it's the same type of limited worldview as Eurocentrism). That Black Star album came out in 1998 and sounds like it should've been out in 1992. Again, amazing album, but it's a regressive record. It tried to do things 'right', by doing it the way it was done at the end of the golden age.

Tho I'm not a big fan of Tyler (but Earl is great) or even Black Hippy, they don't sound like typical rappers as much. They stick with the common signifiers but they're a lot more self-aware than other rappers. Even ASAP Rocky. Rappers who grew up with the internet are less secluded in their hip-hop bubble. You can tell that they care less about being 'hip-hop' than older rappers because they know there's more to music than that and they see how ridiculous rappers actually are.

Yeah I agree, most of the 'underground' hip-hop stuff is pretty bad. I'll take a well-produced ignorant banger over most of this 90s rehash stuff any day

Yeah, I don't think those 'bangers' have much reply value, but when I'm out, getting my dance on, it'll smash a dance floor. But when I listen to modern nostalgic hip-hop, I feel like I heard a better version of it already and lose interest in it by the first hook. "Yes, you're the "realest". Yawn. Next"

Genevieve wrote:Black metal and hip-hop.

The black metal types for being overly religious about black metal. They've literally turned that into a church. All genres have that but black metal does it the most.

And hip-hop for celebrating stupidity, illogic and being generally anti-intellectual and regressive. Forward thinking of ANY kind is generally frowned upon and when something new comes out it's always disregarded as "not hip-hop" (look at how they respond to Death Grips or how no one gives a fuck about Dälek... even De La Soul was too forward thinking when '3 Feet High' came out). If it sounds like it could be released after Biggie died, it's considered shit. No one looks to the future, but only 'back to the old school'.

The heads also love discussing 20 year old beefs more than listening to music. In fact, hip-hop heads tend to hate music. They need to live out their gangsta fantasy by having their favorite rapper's back when they're yet in another beef. Rappers beefing are like watching a married couple argue in a grocery store, and the fans can't get enough of it.

The intellectualized black supremacism, homophobia, anti-semitism etc is annoying as fuck too.

I still listen to a lot of hip-hop shit, but fuck associating with 'heads'. I could write a whole essay about how we should all round up hip-hop heads in concentration camps. Everyone will benefit of it, including rappers, because they won't be forced to pander to fans with the intellectual capacity of toddlers.
You're from NL aswell aren't you? Interesting that you say that since the most respected hiphop artist here are the likes of Opgezwolle, Zwart Licht, Jiggy Dje & Winne, who are all against stupidity and are some of the most forward looking musicians in hiphop (look at producers like Kubus & Delic...)
Maybe you haven't heard too much of that stuff

Could be that you're not from NL and I'm confusing you with someone, sorry if that's the case

metal in particular tbh

used to listen to alot of really fucking extreme dark shit. then I realised I was listening to it because it was extreme.

Whole thing seems like a competition to be the heaviest/kvltest/techiest/EPICest, at the expense of just writing a good song. Not to mention the fucking fans who think anyone who doesnt look like a LOTR character is some sheepy tnuc who doesnt have a clue. plus they get stupidly hype about nordic mythology, major cliche bro l2greek.

Death metal fans are aiight, except for the OMG SO TECHNICAL types. And when I was at a death metal festival near me (mainly for Pig Destroyer) all the guys in the crowd were growling at each other in between songs, supreme plebdom. But the black metal ones are so sheepish. There are even JEWISH BLACK METAL FANS THAT ARE HITLER SYMPATHIZERS. That's how sheepish those people are. I am totally serious. That's not even openmindedness, that's just trying to fit in with the black metal crowd.

One of those types once posted on youtube about how the 'the goat is the free individual the sheep is a tame follower'. I know what he was getting at, but I still gave him a sourced response that said that the goat was one of the first animals that humans successfully domesticated because fuck that guy.

get me gen.. alot of death metal fans are very punkish in their attitude which is cool (but yeah, the tech shit is probably what pissed me off most. Started going off it when all the necrophaggot imitators came about), but black metal fans are fucking nerdish to the extreme. I loved windir and burzum and darkthrone (and some other bands that have slipped my mind since; goes to show) but most of those guys were proper goons - thing is they made something original and exciting, unlike the legions of even goonier nerdier fans that just imitated and exaggerated since.

Say this as a complete nerd obviously (still love grind/crust and doomy/stoner stuff, just in small doses and on occasion)

i wish most BM fans would make like goats and die from loneliness.

Anyway, op, jump up DnB (2006-2010 sort of time).
Grim, grim people - chain snatchers, shotters/rival shotters, plastic gangsters and some real ones, militant bouncers, fights as standard all backed with mcs spitting overly aggressive 'street life' bars (murder, guns, knives, selling drugs, fucking everything that moves) over overly aggressive, often poorly produced, music.
AND, afaik, it's the origin of the YOI.

Anyone who ever went to a Breakin' Science, Innovation, Best of British, Playaz, Low Down Deep night etc. will know what i'm on about.
