Good music films/documentaries

Post by zeta » Thu Jul 11, 2013 7:17 am

Recommend some good films about music... they don't have to be documentaries necessarily, just really interesting, possibly inspiring and extremely well done.

'This is Spinal Tap', 'High Fidelity' and 'Almost Famous' come to mind... I've also looked at getting 'Punk's not Dead' but heard it's really not that great. Also, I'm wondering which Bob Dylan documentary to get out of 'Don't Look Back' and 'No Direction Home'...

Dub Echoes - Really good documentary about dub and how it's influenced modern music, very well put together by the guys at Soul Jazz records, there's a killer LP that goes with this as well. Features interviews with Lee "Scratch" Perry, Roots Manuva, Kode 9 and more.

Image
Musically Mad - A documentary on Reggae Sound System Culture from box making all the way through to deeper spiritual connections, not quite as professional as dub echoes but still a good effort considering it's made by some swedish students, this has quite a lot of live recorded footage.

Bassweight - Dubsteps glory days, a very enjoyable watch and even featuring a little cameo from Seckl3.

^Weird how prominent Deapoh is in that film. He's vanished to another planet now, right?

I guess he was mates with the guys filming it or something, I like that you get to see quite a lot from his perspective though. Barefiles is kind of forgotten about now but at the time it was pretty major.

I haven't got round to it yet but A Great Day in Harlem is supposed to be a good one if you're into your jazz at all.

12.5 hour documentary on HORSE The Band's 2008 world tour. 45 countries in 90 days on a shoestring budget. Some of the jokes / references won't make sense if you aren't familiar with the band but the documentary is more about life on the road than their music and is very funny at times. It's a good watch, but I can understand if you all pass on this one lol
