Well it's supposed to be loosely based on Ragnar Lodbrok http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ragnar_Lodbrok
That's who the main character is.

Actually it's filmed in Ireland.

No, I mean I don't think they said where it takes place IN the show, have they?

You could go from Denmark where I'm at to like southern France or something without the scenery changing too much.

Nah they haven't said where it takes place as far as the vikings location, they have for some of the places they raided like Lindisfarne in the kingdom of Northumbria.
They also traveled to the temple at Uppsala, but don't know how far or close that could be from their home.
The season finale was kind of underwhelming, but it did get renewed so at least one more season in store, which is awesome.
What always throws me off is they call the Angles the English for some reason.

Ive gone on wiki and Ragnar's supposedly the king of Denmark for a period. Denmark however was larger then and had a large part of northern Germany and all of Norway. Upsalla is in Sweden. Great name for a city -its sort of the same as saying 'whoopsie daisy', heureka or 'blimey'.
What always throws me off is they call the Angles the English for some reason.
You mean anglo-saxons or what?

It makes a little more sence given their history to say English rather than british but I agree, its a weird compromise.

Have you seen this? Its by the same director as drive and its kind of a psycadelic viking saga. Worth watching but slow at times. It's funny because there was this foundation that gathered a lot of money to put into historic films about the viking period, but there were no takers until Refn raised his hand, took it all and made this film which has absolutely no basis in reality or in being correct. Just the aesthetic and the violence.

It's the same -Angles becomes the Anglo part and the Saxons are the OG English as far as I know.
The name comes from the district of Angeln, an area located on the Baltic shore of what is today Schleswig-Holstein in Germany.
Schleswig-Holstein being the part of Germany that I mentioned was part of Denmark for a longer period.

Viking saga will go down better with a little dro or something.

Have you read any of the manga Vinland Saga? Been thinking of picking that up as I've heard good things, and let's be honest, can never have too much vikings or viking history.

'Unfortunately' it's a past that culturally we can't really get into over here anymore, except when we are young and forced to live in a self made tent and churn butter for a week on camp.
An equivalent would be if you where sent to Indian camp or something, you know - sort of a grim past made 'fun'.
The people that are really into it, are most of the time really, really concervative. Like bloodline discussion concervative etc.
There's the Icelandic sagas which is great literature especially for kids that I can recommend.

I find this show to be some what lacking in entertainment.

It was alright at first. Then ended up being kind of shit, and I'm having a hard time finishing the later episodes.

Torp/thorpe means a new village founded/established by people that where surplus in another village.
So makes sence in relation to how vikings went about things.

My dad just explained to me the Saxon bit stems from that same former Danish part of Germany, an area known as Sachsen apparently.

I'm predictably late to this, but it's fucking ACE.

Yeah, we've been watching on LoveFilm. Had episode 6 last night with the duel; utterly superb.

The seer chap is brilliant... especially as he's been mainly doing the story that was the basis for the scariest Doctor Who of the 90s (The Curse of Fenric)

With this, The Borgias, Boardwalk Empire and The White Queen, WAGaMagma and I haven't watched any TV set in the modern era for months.

It's gonna be a bit of a culture shock to get Phoneshop back this week!
