Who gets lonely in the studio?
I go back and fourth on this to no end. I started as a musician in a band but fell in love with 100% control of writing electronic music. now after almost 10 years of NO serious colabs. do i miss working as a team and giving up certain creative controls or do i just have studio loneliness. I sometimes do free mix-down work just to feel like i'm apart of some kind of team. how many of you'll only work solo and how many work in colabs?

Re: Who gets lonely in the studio?
I've only worked solo so far but I have people I want to collab with. I produce at home on my laptop. I've never had the fortune of working in a studio. TBH, I prefer working alone. 100% creative control. I can say my tune is mine alone that way. I never get lonely because as aforementioned, I'm at home. Now my girlfriend...she gets lonely when I sink 20 or more hours into a tune, with my headphones on, completely ignoring her. And when she feels ignored/neglected she turns into the man-eating plant from Little Shop of Horrors.
So basically, when I produce, I'm not lonely enough

I dont really have any experience on colabs, so i cant comment. But it does suck having some really good ideas and not being able to make them come to life on your own. I dunno.
Re: Who gets lonely in the studio?
I used to be in bands also and I definitely prefer working alone now, having to rely on other people to practice and write music used to get pretty tedious. Saying that, I really like working with a couple of my friends that rap since I'm still doing all the producing but they still have some input and plus it's always fun doing shit like that with mates. But on the whole I'd rather just crack on at my own pace.
Re: Who gets lonely in the studio?
@Relationships & Production: Just have a talk with your ball and chain about scheduling time for production. When there is an expectation that on Wednesday evenings you'll be spending 3 hours in the studio with the door closed it cuts down on hurt feelings and fights. I've found with the scheduled time I actually get MORE production time as the boss looks forward to her solo time now as well and will go out shopping or out with girlfriends. Sometimes I'll get a whole evening when she does the latter.
@OP: I think I might have gotten bored of working alone ALL the time. But I hate online collabs, that doesn't really satisfy my wanting to work with other musicians. I do have an interesting collab planned with a buddy who plays guitar, so I'm looking forward to that.

Collabs are awesome.

Re: Who gets lonely in the studio?
My girlfriend sometimes tries to lure me to her when I'm producing for hours. I try to ignore it but she usually starts to fake cry but no matter how many times she's done it I always give in. She broke up with me twice because I haven't been spending time with her
I now always find ways to produce when she's with her friends.
About Collabs...
I also got her into Drum & Bass 2 months ago and she sings pretty good so I can get her to drop some lyrics for me when I show her my tracks, she will even just come out of nowhere and sing to my song and leave just leaving me there to use the vocals or not. I have many people around my neighborhood who produces dnb so I can get them to make a track with me, we're even planning to make a 6 room studio for collaborations!

Actually, I prefer working alone. I work in my laptop at home. I don't know why but I never feel lonely, maybe because I produce and watch TV at the sametime
.
And I always have my mom sayin "Come on go out. You're spending too much time on your pc playin games. (Yes, she don't want to know what I really do)"
For Collabs: I don't like online collabs. I prefer working with musicians in "real life", I find it more productive. Now I'm working with a friend that plays guitar and we're working on metalstep song.

Re: Who gets lonely in the studio?
I don't get studio blues. My home pc is my studio in my living room. Got the monitors and KB sat on the computer table all the time. It's also used for gaming, net and general computerage. It's a pretty sweet setup because it's always 'there' and I don't have to go into another room or anything so I can just fire up my daw any time the feeling takes me, plus my girlfriend is sat pretty close to where I am. She really never minds me producing or fucking with sound design she actually find it quite interesting and never really moans about me 'neglecting' her or anything bar the very infrequent comment which I then make extra effort to give her more attention for a bit.
Happy days.
@Collabs. I'm always up for collabing, tried a few times over the net but it's always flopped due to different styles. It's really really hard to find someone on a similar wavelength musically, enough to actually work well together on a tune. That, and I'm hugely inconsistent and seldom actually finish anything anyway...

Re: Who gets lonely in the studio?
Yea. For real. I honestly don't get why that's so weird or funny. I know a lot of people who do this. Trust me, it's way easier to negotiate three hours of studio time every Thursday night (or whatever) than getting in fights about it. I'm not saying the scheduled time is the only time I get to produce. But we both know what's happening every Thursday from 8-11pm.Mason wrote:lol for real?fragments wrote:@Relationships & Production: Just have a talk with your ball and chain about scheduling time for production.
Sounds a lot better than the guy who said he totally ignores his woman, though she sounds like a bit of a nut job what with the fake crying and all.
