Help me buy plugins!

Post by downhill » Wed Jul 31, 2013 5:49 am

[x/post from my gearslutz thread.]

Hi,

I'm a beginner still and I want to create dubstep / hard dance / trance type music, dirty sounding synths and fat thick basslines and crazy sounding effect sounds.

I want to buy some effects, I use DCAM and massive and just purchased sugar bytes WOW 2 and it really made my synths sound different, the drive alone makes it sound more in your face and prominent, add the vowel filter and the sounds are unreal. But WOW2 is good at what it does but a bit limited, can anyone suggest some effects I could use? I'm looking at another filter style plugin that can do chorus and flanging and also a reverb and delay plugin.
Also looking for something that would do a band sweep over frequencies a bit like fabfilter volcano.

I'm looking at the fabfilter creative bundle at the moment, iZotope Trash2 and also fxpansion Maul. I would get anything by Ohm Force but there pro tools support is non-existant.

I want something that sounds rich and gritty, dirty and full.

Anything else you guys could suggest?

Cheers.

I'd learn the stuff you've got inside out before buying anything new.

Don't buy shit until you know why you need it. Demos exist for a reason so you can try stuff out.

Fabfilter is a good choice. Pro-C, Pro-L, Pro-Q, Volcano, Timeless, Saturn, all excellent plugins.

Fab filter stuff is decent, but as Wub and SunkLo said, there's no point buying any plugins at the moment. If you're a beginner then you should really first learn how to use your DAW, and Massive is a beast of a synth - learn how to use it properly and you may not even need any additional plugins to get the sounds you want.

And besides, I know a few people who started learning to produce music, spent a small fortune on vst's and plugins, then after a couple of months realised that they didn't enjoy producing and didn't have the patience to learn how to!

My advice to you would be;

1) learn to use your daw properly; i.e. beat arrangement, making basslines/melodies/chords, use the pluigins that come with your daw, some of them are pretty decent these days.
2) Spend as much time as you can fuc*ing around with massive. It can take a while to work out what everything on it does, but trust me its naughty!
3) Download some free plugins. There's bucket loads of good plugins that are free and can almost do the same thing as expensive ones.
4) Stick with producing for several months, if you still enjoy it and have a basic understanding of your daw, synths and plugins that you do have then maybe think about spending money on some new sh*t.

My opinion is that even if you own the most amazing, expensive highly rated plugins out there, unless you know what you're doing production-wise, they aint gonna do sh*t for ya! As I said, Massive is a fuc*ing beast of a synth; you can easily construct a sound that's "rich and gritty, dirty and full" just by using massive alone.

Good luck with the producing anyway mate!

Guitar Rig will do all the stuff youre looking for. That or the Amplitube stuff.

But honestly it just sounds like you want some new toys to play with. This happens a lot to new producers, where you think you need some new shit to make youre old shit not sound like shit. As everyone else said, you should just learn what you have already and once you get and better understanding of what you have then youll have a better understanding of what you might really need.

That Fabfiter stuff is some of the best out there, but fucking expensive. I suppose if money is no issue then go for it. But you might want to check out some alternatives first. Start here http://bedroomproducersblog.com/ and take a look through what they have. Just because there freebies doesnt mean that there not good. Most of the stuff there is quality, and a lot of it is better then some paid plugins.

Get the fabfilter bundle and don't get the iZotope Trash.. you won't do anything smart with trash.

Considering the amount of freeware you can find, it shouldn't even be considered.

Really?
I own everything I use.
If I don't own it then I always use freeware.

Not trying to be self-righteous or anything but there are many arguments against piracy,
For one if the price is right then why pirate?
If you can't afford something you don't steal it do you?

You will appreciate what you have and learn to use it effectively if you own it.
Rather than downloading every vst and having f-all clue or for that matter caring about what it took to make the vst.

It's not like I don't care about the people who made the vst, but I wouldn't buy it anyway. If I had money to spend on the VSTs, honestly I would.
I don't really see how I am making a difference to anyone when It's so easy to get it for free (steal it), going back to the point that I wouldn't buy it anyways.

I do talk about it, but it gets censored.
In this case encouraging piracy is pretty good advice imo.

I barely have any pirated vsts btw and I bought Pro Tools and Reason and although I mostly agree with EH, I don't think the price is
right most of the time.

Honestly, if youve been producing more then 6 months you shouldnt have any cracks. By then you should have youre shit figured out and know what you need. A lot of demos out there blow so i can understand why people would pirate, but it doesnt take long to figure out if something is for you or not. And once you do, shell out the cash or drop the crack. Like EH said, if you dont place any value on the software how are you supposed to care about it?

Youre not supposed to talk about or advocate piracy because its a blatantly illegal activity that violates the Eula of said pirated software. Thats why youre shit is getting censored.

Anyway, OP if youre still here, do what you need to do. But if some software you downloaded doesnt work, dont come bitching to us.
