That's half of what makes it so creepy really. In fact most of the scariest movies i've seen leave you in the dark about the antagonists motives.. It creates mystery and and a sense of uncertainty.Harkat wrote:Just watched it upon recommendation from this thread. The two leads were well played, but fuck was that about. Didn't have much of a story innit. Just big vague scary Resident Evil 4 cult.DRTY wrote: Kill List is a good shout. Unreal tension

Innit, loved the film, but the ending just opened up so many plot holes and fuckery.DiegoSapiens wrote:the ending on kill list was so disappointing
Man, I just don't get scared by films, so I'll jump at those cheap fright scares, but nothing really gets under my skin like that. Desensitized I guess. I don't rate any of the torture porn films like Saw, Hostel and that. One film that does kinda stand out for me there though is Event Horizon, maybe I saw it at the right age or something, but that shit me up.
[rec] was decent, but wasn't terrifying.
I actually rated Paranormal Activity for the first 45 minutes, good tension and shit. That bit where she's stood by the bed just watching him all night reminds me of a proper intense nightmare I used to have when I was a kid. the film was pretty bad though.
oddly the only film I have seen recently to really get under my skin and shit me up quite a bit was Platoon. Actual genuine horror at that film.
Insidious was dead out.

Event Horizon I wouldn't call torture porn, it's just really creepy in the same way Hellraiser is.
It's been quite awhile since I've seen any horror worth rating.
Session Nine is always a good one, same with Jacob's Ladder.
I did enjoy V/H/S 1 and 2 though.

Kinda true, the horror isn't in the torture porn for this film, but damn, in that uncensored directors cut, there's some fucking grim bits.deadly habit wrote:Event Horizon I wouldn't call torture porn, it's just really creepy in the same way Hellraiser is.

I like gore when done right like that, makes things even more unsettling. Midnight Meat Train is another good example, then again a good chunk of Barker's stuff has gore.pete bubonic wrote:Kinda true, the horror isn't in the torture porn for this film, but damn, in that uncensored directors cut, there's some fucking grim bits.deadly habit wrote:Event Horizon I wouldn't call torture porn, it's just really creepy in the same way Hellraiser is.

Re: Recommend some genuinely terrifying horror films?
Just had a chat with my housemate 2 films came up: The Shining and the Thing (the original obv), both are not particularly scary (The Thing is certainly more classic horror), but unsettling to the max and mad tension throughout. I think that gets to me more.

Re: Recommend some genuinely terrifying horror films?
The original The Thing or the original remake with Kurt Russell?
Re: Recommend some genuinely terrifying horror films?
Well the original wasn't called the thing. There are two called "The Thing". The first being he one with Kurt Russell. The second being a shitty prequel that came out recently
Besides I'd say the John Carpenter The Thing with Kurt is maybe not what I'd call a remake. Sure there was a film based on the same source material before it but the John Carpenter one isn't exactly based on it and if anything is in some ways closer to the original story

Re: Recommend some genuinely terrifying horror films?
The original is widely know as 'The Thing' though. Request for clarification is warranted imo.
Re: Recommend some genuinely terrifying horror films?
Yeah fair enough, the original was known as The Thing for a long time before the John Carpenter one.
However it's pretty consistently since that films release been refered to by the full title to avoid confusion

The bits where they show footage from the dark side on the computer screen are pretty farked up.pete bubonic wrote:Kinda true, the horror isn't in the torture porn for this film, but damn, in that uncensored directors cut, there's some fucking grim bits.deadly habit wrote:Event Horizon I wouldn't call torture porn, it's just really creepy in the same way Hellraiser is.
