Melodic Dubstep (We Wont Leave) (WIP) - Kandicaine
http://soundcloud.com/kandicaine-vybz/we-wont-leave
Work in progress about %80 complete. Looking for some feedback.
I'm a bit confused as to whats happening with my song. It seems to sound quite a bit different over a sound system than it does through my headphones. I feel as though I'm going to need to rent some studio time to finish it up and balance/eq everything properly.
I've noticed lately that a lot of my volume levels are different over a sound system than through my headphones especially.

Dude im not trying to be mean or anything but i have no clue as to what i just herd... All your synths are pretty decent could add a bit of variation to them but thats not the main point. All of your sounds are out of wack! Do you know what staying in the key of something in a song? You cant just add random midi notes expecting to sound good. Good musicans have a sound grasp of music theory. Learn to adjust all the levels as you go through your mix and not just let all the synths sit at its max peak. Till 0:54 the song was perfect but then when you hit the "drop" it died out. Thats when you add in your second lead or maybe just automate something on it. The reason why people like listening to good songs is that theres always something changing or bring brought into there field of view at least every 10 seconds or couple bars weather they notice it or not. Thats why dubstep is crazy in you can just smash crazy sounds together and that why i like it personally.
If you want more of that melodic dubstep look up blackmill and analyze his songs. Intro are very slow and warm. His sub is just beautiful. You cant just have a lead, low wobble and and a pad sitting at the same frequency range. Look at your wave clip of your song on sound cloud. Everything is smashed together and crunched.
My suggestion is learn the basics of music theory and learn a couple scales, such as the minors since its more a dark sound. Popular in edm and the work on your synthesis and mixing ability. Great stuff in the money shot thread and for synthesis try learning a nasty growl or reece. Threads are also here.
Making music is a wonderful thing and especially on a computer or laptop since you have every sound at your will but it doesnt come easy, only YEARS of hard work. Played guitar for 10 years and only recently became semi good at it.
Good luck brother and wish to see a more songs from you soon

I don't really know much about scales but I'm fairly musically inclined. The whole song sounds in the same key to me. Root note is Am.
That's what I meant about it sounding different through the headphones rather than a sound system. Because through my headphones everything sounds balanced and great and then when I hear it through something else everything sounds off. I probably don't have the best headphones but they're not bad. Monster Inspirations with ANC.
Guess its going to take a lot of work to get it sounding just right lol.
I did adjust some of the levels and EQ it a bit. The change is hardly noticeable until I can hear it through a sound system (and I don't have one).
Could it be a problem with my soundcard maybe? that I might be hearing something different than what's actually happening. I ported the MP3 to my ipod, sounds about the same. Again, with the headphones though.

Well your root not doesnt really matter unless your building chords or a progression. If you want to play in Am then you can only use the notes - A#,C,C#,Eb,F,G,A,A# or else its going to sound un natural. theres ways out of moving a key to change mood but thats a different story. I highly doubt its your soundcard because i have an old shitty macbook from 2008 and everything is so out dated and my sound from my daw to exporting sounds fine. Your always going to have a different sound when you play a song through monitors and regular file on your ipod. Its up to the sound engineer that masters your song that does that for you.
Soundcard doesnt necessarily mean youll get better audio, its just a way from your computer to take the digital code thats happening on the computer and changing that code into audible sound.
Try in your daw to collect all and save the stems of your song and place it into a blank project and see if it sounds different. Maybe a strange reason it could get messed up while exporting from your daw or could be physiological. Always thought my songs sounded better after i exported them than inside my daw. Its the same exact sound but i guess if your brain thinks other wise you could literal be hearing something different over ipod or a system because you automatically think, oh its blasting on my speakers and ipod. Sounds better than before!
Thats what i take on it.

You were right. It was completely out of key.
I've started to revise it a bit. Sounding much better. Thanks.
I think I'm gonna have to start reading a lot more into scales. I've been dedicating most of my research time to other theory.
So... I need to make sure my song is as balanced as possible so that I can hire a sound tech to master it. Then it will sound the same through a system and the headphones, right? I did a bit of EQ work last night too but I'm still willing to bet that my levels are going to be off. I think I need some studio headphones.
I also find too that my songs sound better after exporting. I think that has to do with CPU power and quality of soundcard. I have FL studio working at 44000Hz (or something) so its as high quality as it can be while I'm working.
I'll keep working with what I've got and post an update sometime for you to hear
Thanks again! (It's sounding much better already.)
I changed the chorus quite a bit. I think I might leave the cut the same and definitely the bass solo. Need to re do the intro and outro to fit better as well.

Thats awesome! I know a guy on youtube has a pretty good series on youtube on theory. Specifically in edm music. Ill see if i can find his channel again. Great videos from him.
You have to try and get your song to fill up the right amount of freqencies in the spectum to your listener. Depends on what kind of music your going to make. If you creating melodic stuff it needs to be really up beat and have lots of high in sounds. But to a degree though. Look at this video from a fellow user on here. Posts good stuff on his channel and gives a nice idea how well your mix should sit with sounds. You can always eq and side chain your sounds to make it sit a lot better.

All producers should be able to know the basics to mastering and mixing a decent song. Most of the time people send there tracks in to an engineer for the track to sound fuller and louder. Maybe bring out more of a certain sounds that others. You dont really need 500 headphones but if you can afford it go ahead. I have pair of some HD senhinsers for 60 bucks. There not bad really. You should always test your tracks and how well they sit on regular ipod headphones to your really expensive producing headphones.
Your intro was pretty good, just try fading sounds in or having a pause for half a bar to get that nice build up. Youll know what to do after making more songs. How long does it normally take you to finish a track? A couple ones that i finish take a week and its pretty mediocre but is mixed nice and sound design is good. I just need to learn write the music aspect more smoothly.

Usually takes me a couple weeks to finish a track.
I've only been producing for about 5 months. This is in my opinion the best track I've come up with and the most complete. Most projects I give up half way through, unable to get the sound that I want. I'm really enjoying this one though. I've been working on it for about a week and a half (consecutively).
I plan to spend about 3-4 weeks total on this. Maybe a bit more. Until I get everything perfect Lol.
A lot of stuff I was coming up with before sounded really old school. This is sounding a bit more modern and the sound that I want to work with.

Alright sounds about right. Oh one last thing is try to compress more stuff. Makes sounds a lot more flat and full instead of thin and dry sounding.

First you'd need to specify which A minor scale you mean, but assuming you mean the natural minor it's a, b, c, d, e, f and g. And besides that, no diatonic would combine a note and its sharp in one scalem

Couple thousand years of musical theory. This is gonna be a large, long time undertaking lol.MysticNetherlands wrote:First you'd need to specify which A minor scale you mean, but assuming you mean the natural minor it's a, b, c, d, e, f and g.
