Headphones?

Post by Kandicaine » Sun Aug 11, 2013 6:38 pm

Right now I'm using some Monster Inspiration w/ ANC headphones.

I'm being told that a lot of my levels are off in my songs. Everything sounds fine in my headphones so I'm guessing they're making it sound different than it really is.

I'm wondering what would be some good studio headphones for accurately monitoring during production/studio work.

Thanks.

AKG 240s seem to have good reviews. I might look into those. Sounds like what I'm looking for.

Thanks.

The new line of 240s are actually kind of meh from what I've read. All depends on your budget I guess.

Been using krk 8400's for a little while now, Since I live in a block of flats I can't use my monitors real late, I've been finding that I don't have to re-mix everything I did while using headphones. Does the job.

Their high end is kinda hyped. They sound very much like a closed can. But they can still be revealing, especially in that upper midrange. Sometimes I'll reference a mix on them and something will be poking out a lot that I didn't notice on other cans. I could see being able to get good mixes on them but I like them more as a reference, sort of the NS10 of headphones. I consider them a valuable headphone to have in my toolbox.

I haven't tried any Beyers or other headphones in the same price range, so I can't really make a fair comparison. If you've only had cheaper headphones though, you'll enjoy them I think. They're not spectacular in the sub region but most monitoring cans aren't. For that you might wanna pick up the Sony XB500 for referencing below 200hz. The Beyer 880 are actually pretty linear down to 20hz as well, so you may want to consider those.

Thanks. Well what Im looking for is something that is alright in (nearly) all frequencies, rather than something that's 'great for mixing the ___-frequencies but otherwise shit'.
I'm not looking for anything fancy, I mean I'm currently using cheap hi-fi speakers(no,no,no) and the cheapest pair of urbanears headphones :W: (terrible for mixing) basically anything is better than that. :
Do you think I should go for the m50s, and if not have you got any other recommendations? :)

They're one of the top in that price range. KRK 8400 are supposed to be good as well, and Beyer 990 pros are in that price range as well. Beyer has really confusing model names so they can be hard to compare.

I've only heard the M50s out of the sub-200 dollar range, so I can't give you completely objective advice. But I think compared to what you're working with now, you'll see an improvement. The M50s are a good first headphone for monitoring/audiophilia. They obviously don't compare to headphones twice their price or more, but even if you upgrade down the road, I think you'll still keep the M50s on deck for referencing. So for that reason I can recommend them.

They're also really cool, have flexible swivel earcups, 1/8th inch plug with a screw on 1/4 inch adapter. They're good for DJing and portable use, easy to drive with an ipod, etc. They're what I bring with me when I go biking or out of the house with my ipod. They clamped a bit hard at first but I have a big head. I stretched them out over a box for a few hours and they're more comfortable now. They pressed a bit on my ears, but stretching the headband helped and I also rolled up some cotton fibers and pushed them through the holes in the back of the earpads for more cushion. They also fold up pretty small to throw in your bag or whatever. They're a pretty good all around headphone. Sound signature works best with guitar based rock and stuff like that but they perform pretty well all around.

If you email the online store Scit Scat and offer them $100 they'll take it. At least that was the case a short while ago. They just can't advertise that price publicly. That way if you get them and don't like them, you can sell them on ebay and break even or possibly make a bit of profit if you're lucky. Make sure you burn em in though before deciding.

Actually I just checked and they're giving away the M50s when you buy certain Audio Technica mics. So if you had the extra cash and didn't mind the effort you could probably buy the cheapest AT mic that qualifies, keep the headphones and sell the mic on ebay. Just check out the average selling price on ebay and factor that into the price of the headphones. Unopened mic would probably sell for more than the sale price on Scit Scat, so you might actually make money and get free headphones for a bit of effort. If you don't feel like going through all that, 100 plus shipping is still a really good deal compared to the amazon price (which is 160 with free shipping) And compared to the other headphones around 100 bucks, you're getting pretty good value for the money.

Not affiliated with them btw, just heard that tip on gearslutz or head-fi back when I was shopping for the M50s myself.

Definitely gonna look into this.

The Monster Inspiration w/ ANC that I'm using right now I paid 190 for, 299 retail. They're apparently not getting the job done. Something in the 100-200 price range should be fairly easy to do.

I switched to 240's a while ago from an 80€ headset and they are different as night and day. At first I missed the sub from my old cans, but now I absolutely enjoy them. without having reference to a higher priced model I would recommend them, because I am able to hear my synths a lot better and where they are placed in the stereo field or if they're clashing in frequencies and so on. +++They are quite comfy

Looks like I might be getting the m50s (when I can afford them). Much better than what I have now. Thanks SO much for the detail and the tips!

he told you their high end is hyped, that should be enough to tell you they're not what you're looking for. when i tried them i thought their sub range was too pronounced. not as much as beats, but close.

pushing again for you to get the akg 240s
