from what i remember some of the transitions on that mix aren't beatmatched but are usually clean with the volume fading while coming in or out on a breakdown without a beat.

When I've seen him he was the one behind and in control of the decks. Which in my eyes means he was DJing, however badly

yes but he's not mixing at all, just playing one riddim after the other, selectah-style

Yeah this. It's pretty lazy imo. It's not like The Bug is playing loads of different genres

well th e selecta was originally the guy who handed over the dubplates to the dj, the one who had a little forage around in the vinyl bags for the next tune

and as impressive as being a good dj is to some people, most people goin out do just wanna get fucked and hear some good tunes being played

imo its 75% good selection, 25% dj skills

some tipes of music like dub sounds shit mixed. Selector style of djing comes from jamaica where their role was selecting the tunes (wich have sense when you have exclusive dubplates), making effects and delays and sometimes singing over the tunes like this

He puts on a tune, rewinds it (every time), plays it again, and then rewinds it again but this time while playing a whooshing noise, which he cuts out once the next tune has started.

No need to mix when you have a dub siren

Thats the way The Bug works, he brings guys he works with and just plays tunes for them to ride over. Very few 'DJs' who mix all set bring the likes of Daddy Freddy, Flowdan, Miss Red ect. with them.

Plus it smashes a dance, more so (imo) than a Youngsta set that arguably has the best mixing in this scene.. so whys it matter?

Can't believe The Bug is being criticised lol, guys the most consistently brilliant artist in this scene.. true innovator. 'learn to mix' lol

saw him last month, he still did not mix. it was nowhere as formulaic as what you saw though - was really him playing his riddims for flowdan and miss red to spit over, then using reverb on stuff so that it sounded really post-apocalyptic. was excellent

Maybe I just caught him on a bad night then, he basically killed any vibe in the dance with his shit set.
Hatcha afterwards smashed it though, I would argue because there was actually flow to his set, not loads of noise and (unwanted) rewinds.
