Post by Terpit » Sat Aug 17, 2013 2:27 pm

Anyone tried it? Good?

Not taken benzos for ages now and don't really want to take them again, heard this stuff was good but its illegal in the UAE (they are fucking weird here..) got a few from a m8, how effective? How soon until you are sleepy?

I've got insomnia and have been taking 2 pills of melatonin before i go to bed for the past 2-3 years now and I must honestly say that i can't really tell a huge difference anymore. I guess it worked alright for a while in the beginning but now I don't feel like they're working at all so I might as well just stop taking them tbh.
So yeah, if you normally don't take any pills or other medication they will probably help you out for the first couple of weeks, but it kinda looks like your body just gets used to it after a while so for long term you might want to consider something else.

Yeah they'll probably help you out if you just take them occasionally instead of every single day for a long period of time.

Wish this was easily obtainable in the UK. You guys in the U.S. can buy this over the counter right?

If you use a computer a lot during the day or particularly at night - I highly suggest a program called f.lux. It makes your screen a sort of brown tint at night time so the LCD/LED isn't so bright. Apparently due to the nature of LEDs being blue, it can affect melatonin levels and also sleeping patterns / rhythms due to it being a similar kelvin as the sun. I personally use it 24/7 but it could be a free alternative for you to try out, particularly if you work at a computer a lot a night.

Has it had an effect on my sleep? Not all that much that I can tell the differences. However a weird thing I have noticed is I dream a lot more. Interesting none the less. Good luck with your sleeping issues.

Last I read the evidence was a bit mixed. The most recent RCT I've read had some convincing data (It's been a while so I can't recall the numbers exactly, but something like a quicker time to sleep initiation by 20 minutes or so, an increased sleep efficiency of 2.2% and a greater duration of sleep of around 30 minutes or something when compared to placebo).

Personally it seems to help a bit if my sleep schedule is a bit messed up from call or something. I've heard of people using it continuously, however I usually reserve it for when I really need it. Anecdotally I've heard of people developing a tolerance but I'm not aware of any evidence supporting that in the literature.

As far as dosing the last I heard the maximal effect is actually felt at 0.3 mg (which is actually similar to our bodies endogenous level). Anything higher is pretty much just a waste of drug. It's OTC here in Canada too and since everyone and their dog produces it it's usually pretty cheap.

These tablets are 1mg each. Will try having a half next time to see if it works.
Not that I'll need to take one for a while

I have chronic insomnia. Melatonin doesn't do shit cause it can't even cross the blood brain barrier. For otc, I'd suggest benedryl or unisom.

No, no recreational potential lol :(

I take 5mg sublingual melatonin combined with 100mg 5htp when I have trouble falling asleep and have about a 90% success rate getting a good nights sleep when I do. I also use one of those apps that is supposed to measure your sleep and wake you during light sleep. When I dose to fall asleep it does say I'm in deep sleep for longer than normal. I don't read too much into that but I do notice that I can take the pills at 3/4am after not being able to sleep and wake up feeling pretty damn rested at 9am.

Lots of people on here seem to have sleeping problems, I reckon a lot of you need to start doing a bit of exercise more regularly and whatnot.

Not always the case, I do manual labor all day and sometimes struggle to drop off.. physically shattered but mentally my brain doesn't switch off. I can sleep fine most of the time its mainly when I know I need sleep. Recently I came home to work and my train was 11:20 so had to be up at 10.. went bed (tired) at 12 and didn't get to sleep til 8:30. Was a fucking wreck and missed my train :(

Despite being tired I still didn't get to sleep til about 2am that night.

I find a combination of cocodamol, red wine and reading before bed helps. I'm like Terpit, rarely need help sleeping but when I do, I need something else I'll be up for ages. I recall having it in my early teens but it didn't really bother me as much, back then I could go sleep at 4am and sleep through a Science lesson or something lol.

Yeah I take this as I can't find anywhere to get melatonin.
Not every night though as it's pretty hard on the liver. Usually just weeknights when I've been working late and know I'm gonna have trouble sleeping.

5-htp is not so bad unless you take huge amounts. Its basically on the of the most active substances in old cheese.
I do take melatonin regularly lately and its pretty helpful.
