I highly recommend a multiband distortion VST such as Ohmicide. Either that or layering several synths and using a bandpass filter on each so you can put different kinds of distortion on each. I like to leave the < 250hz range alone and use the "puncher" preset on ohmicide for everything above that and to about 1k or 1.2k (I forget exactly, I'm not at home) Above that I mess with it and sometimes route it to another track and put chorus and flanger on it.
