a mess?

Post by Paddy McMurphy » Tue Aug 27, 2013 5:00 am

Been reading this forum for a while now... what's going on with it? What's all this "bigup" shit about? A popularity contest? It seems really really childish.

Its a button that means you like the post.

Childish? Your making it like its a "I have a Big dick" button.

I agree with this, it's been done all over.

I wouldn't think of it as a 'popularity contest' more a guide for who might be good to listen to with advice and whatnot.

E.g if someone is regularly giving advice and get these 'big-ups' then it is agreed that most people find it good advice.

On the other hand if someone gives advice that people find not so useful then they won't get the 'rep' and so noobs can get an idea who to listen to and who to 'avoid'

(although saying that, not all people with high 'rep' may have good advice and not all people with low 'rep' may have bad advice it is simply a guide)

The problem is, this is DSF.
The SNH alone used the big up button to force threads to the top of the forum as a joke.
It is very easy to manipulate votes.
Electric_Head wrote:It's only a matter of time before the Dubs board clocks onto the big up button.
it will become a big up for a big up.
Pretty soon you'll have some guys with 2000 big ups because every 0 has big upped him for his big up.
It's going to be a big mess of bigups and then no one will trust the big up system resulting in all big ups being removed.

Big up.

The karma / respect function is fairly common now days, it's like the ability to review the quality of posts. It should be especially helpful to the Production board, being able to identify the best posts and posters. It's not a popularity contest for sure,

And yeah the snh crew will abuse the shit out of it for the first month or two, then when they get bored and move on to something else, it'll prove useful. Plus I'll see if there's a way we can mod the usage of it (so the joke threads get excluded form the top lists and that).

The Dubs forum will be an interesting one, it could work or it could get abused. We shall see.

SNH is already over it
Took a wknd.

As long as it is used properly then it is a valuable tool.
However being the eternal cynic I don't believe it will work in here.
But I will hope to be proven wrong.
At worst it will just mean that ppl will disregard the stats if things go wrong.

Yeah I'd also like to change the rating system and how it's displayed. The percentages don't really make sense, especially with no legend/key to work from.

Early days!

Personally I wouldn't even take any notice of the big ups. I've been using this forum for a couple of years now and it didn't take long to realise that DSF is quite a 'clicky' community with certain users favouring eachother and slating users with minimal 'posts' if they don't conform to their 'unwritten rules' of the forum.

Electric_Head's description of what's likely ot happen with the new biggup system is absolutely spot on!!

When I post on here looking for specific advice, I listen to all users regardless as to whether they've got 200,000 posts or 2 posts - I've been given valuable advice from all sorts of users on DSF - high numbers of bigups or posts in my opinion is NOT indicative of that users production skills or ability to give me the advice I'm looking for.

All we'll see is simply the users that spend their entire lives on DSF (it's amazing how some of them have time to actually produce music considering the amount of posts they have) bigging up other fanatical users within the DSF 'clicky community', and vice-versa

My point is; the amount of biggups someone has on their profile will not determine who I'm more likely to take production advice from - in my opinion every user on here is equal, regardless of the amount of biggups or posts someone has. :z:

Profile big ups, perhaps not, but post big ups could work out really nicely.

All we'll have is people praising shit track in the dubs & wips area simply to get big ups from noob producers to make them look more like a reliable source of advice.

To me the big ups don't mean a thing, just another way for certain users to get their tongues even further up other users back sides - might aswell have a 'LICK RING' button.

Lick ring would be amazing.

Perhaps an obvious question, but: If you really don't care about it, why does it bother you? Most of it requires the users active participation. And unless you actively go to the toplists/list pages, it changes nothing about your viewing experience?

I think it's great.
As soon as people start using it more it will be great, a post that has been bigged up is a post that people agree with.
So when someone gives you advice, you can tell what the others thought about it (without having them reply).

Don't see the problem. :)

It doesn't bother me massively, but seeing as DSF is supposed to be an online community I thought I'd be entitled to give my opinion on the new features.

I understand that it requires active user participation and that it's going to change nothing about my viewing experience, however the way I see it is this;

There are a select number of users on DSF that seem to think it's their god-given right to give other users (usually with a lower post count than themselves) facetious comments and speak as if they are some superior, godly being. Bearing in mind that when you listen to the tracks made by some of these jumped up prima-donnas, they're utter garbage and don't warrant them being so arsey to other users if the forum.

It is in my opinion that having a 'big up' count as well as a post count, is just going to further 'justify' them leaving sarky comments or giving facetious feedback.

Sooner or later less experienced or new producers won't bother using this forum, for the simple fact that they don't want to get spoken to like a moron by some twat who has x thousand posts & untold amounts of big ups and spends their whole life on DSF.

In the long run I think it'll be detrimental to the forum.

Obviously this is all my opinion tho.

@boincingfish; it's not the post that gets the big ups tho is it? It's the user themselves. Or am I wrong?

Peace!

I agree with pretty much all of that. Lots of people appear to feel entitled because of their post count. But not everyone with a high post count is an asshole. There are plenty of friendly and helpful posters with thousands of posts, plenty of unfriendly yet helpful posters with thousands of posts, and plenty of unfriendly and unhelpful posters with thousands of posts.

When someone biggups a post, the post gets a big up thing underneath it with the name(s) of the person/people who biggupped it and that gets tallied in the posters "Been Bigged Up" count under their avatar.
