John Dies At The End


Really entertaining and creative movie done with the feeling of a wacky 1980s cult movie done nowadays on a modest budget. There's a fair amount of Buckaroo Banzai in there. It's got hints towards Evil Dead 3 in terms of gore (although overall this isn't a gory film). It's pretty creative overall. However the last third does feel kind of rushed which lets it down a bit. I mean the movie sets up all this interesting and crazy shit happening only to have a very generic climax to the film (although the it is saved a little in the bit running up to the credits). I found it to be an enjoyable movie though and I think it could be a cult hit in years to come. Just a little let down in a couple parts (probably due to budget issues or something).

I haven't read the book, which a number of reviews say is better though so I can't judge from that angle.

Read the book, the movie was a great adaptation for the budget.

Watching Amityville classic flicks 1-9 again. From proper 70s horror to 3d cheese to plain cheese.
Also have Joel from MST3K's original HBO show pilot en route on VHS in the mail, amped for that.

I didn't think I was going to enjoy this tbh (probably why I've only just seen it), but it's actually quite brilliant.

The whole thing smacks of a writing team that saw a guaranteed market for a Mozart biopic but then realised he wasn't a very interesting person, so just made a character up that vaguely fitted a few remarks and tacked a big budget period moodpiece around him. The constant giggling makes him seem like a lightweight, artschool waster rather than the greatest mainstream musician of his time... actually, the portrayal of Mozart is worryingly similar to (about as accurate as) the kid that plays Prime Minister Pitt The Even Younger in Blackadder the Third.

The only way to experience Mozart is by LISTENING. Fuck this movie HARD.

It's an adaptation of a broadway play. Regarding that I think they did a good job. Forman has made much better movies though.

It's not the best biopic, but the acting and plot rock, especially for music lovers. You sir have offended my film taste.Might I recommend The Music Lovers, A Tchaikovsky biopic I rate.

I'll give it a whirl... do people know a bit more about Tchaikovsky's personality than they do Mozart? I mean, there really was only so far they were ever going to get with this one.

The main problem is that I am a music lover rather than a fan of... period drama. I've been a fan of Mozart ever since I was a squeaky-voiced choirboy singing his Requiem in church but Amadeus didn't really tell me anything about him as a creative genius (unlike, say, I'm Not There does about Dylan whilst also being far less by-numbers). They just dressed a hammy-as-fuck actor in 18th Century clothes and a wig and got him to giggle whilst the studio orchestra played all the hits. They couldn't even decide what accent all the people were going to speak in!?

The soundtrack was fucking incredible, mind.

This makes a lot of sense. I could totally see it working if you were getting to hear a live orchestra play the soundtrack at the same time. The script and performances might just be bearable then.

Maybe I'm giving it a pass out of nostalgia, will rewatch, but I always loved it as a kid and one of the things that got me making music.
Most of the biopics of classic composers are well worth a watch imo.

Liked that a lot. It has a bit of a cheesy feel to it sometimes, but yeah it's a 'classic sci-fi set in todays world' kind
of thing.
It's basically about a 'bureau' that plays god and decides everyones faith in a plan. Obviously the plot is about a
deviation from that plan

Similar to Looper and Source Code, but more of a romance story than a mindfuck movie.

Great movie. A tad dramatised to make it slick and more viewable but the story is there and it's an important one.

I think you are right in your judgement there magma, Milos Forman is way too formulaic; to the point where it's not even important who he is portraying. Having said that, I enjoyed Man on the moon (about Andy Kaufman -starring Jim Carrey). 'One bird flew over the cuckoos' nest' has always been highly rated, but to me, it has the same problem as his other films with focusing too much on one character. Jack Nicholson might almost be saving it though.

Woody Allens
Sweet and Lowdown, about Django Rheinhart (Sean Penn) reeks of Milos FormaT, but has humour. I would recommend that, also as a film that tries to deal with music.
