As sunklo said, Moore's law and that is it. Some time will pass, and i7's price will be the same as i3's now. The thing is that for example things like games, as time passes need more processing power, but music production doesn't. It's a constant.
Thanks everyone

Are we on the same planet here?
All of that is completely the opposite!
Games dont need more CPU power, its all about the GPU now.
Music production is one of the most processor intensive activites you can have, its ALL on the CPU.
Music production would only be a constant if you kept using the same plugins, sequencer and instruments and never upgraded them (or wanted to run more instances), otherwise you need more processor power to run more powerful, intensive software. Would i want to go back 5 or 6 years to running my (nearly) top of the line core 2 quad cpu and cubase 4? no bloody way! Wouldnt even get a handful of slate FGX limiters to run on it!

PROCESSING = CPU, GPU ETC.
Games still make big usage of cpu. I know what I'm talking about, because I myself code(d) graphics stuff in OpenGL.

Hence why it's better to get a potent CPU for production that's going to last you a long time, and then upgrade your GPU as your gaming needs change.

Or just go with whatever Apple throws in there and suck it up.
That's what I did I never had any problems since I got it.
Although I tried to play a flash game once and the thing burned a hole where my testicles used to be.

Apple shouldn't ever factor into a performance/price discussion.

Yeah but when it comes to laptops, I'll never buy anything else.
I stopped looking at performance like: this cpu clocks at that speed etc.. Because in the end I want a portable computer that
doesn't stop running during a gig, like my expensive Asus used to do.
But the thread is about desktops so that's mostly irrelevant.

An SSD would help with that, HDDs don't like vibrations.
Apple are expensive, but the build quality is phenomenal. I haven't been able to find an equivalent PC laptop with the same quality, and I've been looking for a while.
