Not for very long, qualification inflation is going through the roof. In less than 10 years bachelor's became the standard base qualification, in another 10 it'll be masters I bet. Then, in the next 10 it's only logical it'll be PhDs to 'make you stand out'. Even Japanese people are going for masters and their uptake rate was only like 1% of the population or something not so long ago.Pedro Sánchez wrote:I've got a PHD so I'm pretty lucky.

That started happening around the time there was the big rush for Uni places not long after the crisis hit. People that would've gone straight into employment couldn't, so decided to jump into Uni before the government took the cap off tuition fees.test recordings wrote:Not for very long, qualification inflation is going through the roof. Not enough places on decent/useful course for the number of people applying, so folk went around going for whatever they could get. Job market hasn't recovered by the time they've finished their 3/4yr course, so you've lines at the employment office filled with people waving a 2:2 in Finger Painting or whatever.

There will never be an influx of people with PHD, it's genetics, unless you are paying for an implant or attaching weights to it.

On a serious level until these 'agencies' fuckoff and people develop skills to make things, things aren't going to get better, not in a world where the flow of people going where the 'money' is concentrated, its becoming evidence already, opportunities are being ringfenced to areas of investment, so you get everyone rushing to these areas...Then you end up with London.

Speaking of agencies. Employment Agencies. A lot of them. Everywhere. Is the plan for the nation to eventually get every single unemployed person working as a recruitment agent? How does recruitment generate actual real measurable wealth? I don't really understand the purpose of a lot of them to be honest.Pedro Sánchez wrote:On a serious level until these 'agencies' fuckoff and people develop skills to make things, things aren't going to get better, not in a world where the flow of people going where the 'money' is concentrated, its becoming evidence already, opportunities are being ringfenced to areas of investment, so you get everyone rushing to these areas...Then you end up with London.

It doesn't, that's the ploy of non-jobs, it's one big economical ponzi scheme.hugh wrote:Speaking of agencies. Employment Agencies. A lot of them. Everywhere. I work in the science industry and it's getting very difficult to get any job in it without going through agencies. They don't care about you in any way, they just have inserted themselves as this parasitic middle man. Getting feedback from interviews, feedback from applications etc. through them is a fucking nightmare.
Re: Anyone else getting sick of jobs being outsourced?
Saves companies the time and effort of finding people if they can just go to an agency with a pool of 10000 people and say "we need people with skill xyz. you got any?". Plus, they make wedge by getting your first year's salary from the company that hire you (a lot of the time anyway). You get a job with them for £30k a year? Agency gets £30k.hugh wrote:Speaking of agencies. Employment Agencies. A lot of them. Everywhere. Re: Anyone else getting sick of jobs being outsourced?
Got a temp position through an agency at a quality firm. The firm wanted to hire me full time, contract I signed with the agency stated any offers of employment with my placement firm, they get a cut. The agency wanted $52k. The firm withdrew their offer of employment. This went down in 2008 after I'd been on dsf for a year or so, after getting the shaft, I started spending a lot more time on dsf on the company's dime. Bastards.

Japan's full of agencies, it's a way of getting around hiring people full-time so they can be dropped quickly. Standard thing for English teachers, you don't get full health insurance or pension and the school can just have you removed. No job security, the UK also has a lot of 0 hour contracts that fuck people over.

I've heard stories where people have rang up the companies after interviews and asked why there was no feedback etc, only to have the company turn round and tell them "we wanted to offer you the job but the agency fee was too large"garethom wrote:Saves companies the time and effort of finding people if they can just go to an agency with a pool of 10000 people and say "we need people with skill xyz. you got any?". This is a fucking joke, I have been to many interviews (sometimes repeat interviews at certain companies) only to get no feedback. If I was to ring them and be told something like this I would fucking flip my nut.

Re: Anyone else getting sick of jobs being outsourced?
Company I worked for won a major international contract, we had a workforce of 12 and needed another 5 people to complete the job, so the manager contacted an agency asking for details about getting the staff that would be right for the job. This agency said they could get the amount of staff needed at half the pay, now this manager was a exploitative cunt to begin with half our workforce were apprentices doing proper work for £2 odd p/h without the formal training they should of received, anyway, so he jumps at the chance but asks how is this so, the agency tell him they will outsource the work to india but they will do the job just as well. I seen the invoices for this work and I can tell you the agency took less than it would of cost to pay the 5 staff on natminwage, you can guess what happened to our workforce after that.

Re: Anyone else getting sick of jobs being outsourced?
I've worked as a field archaeologist on and off for the past five years. As much as I don't like to admit it, a lot of the digging jobs are given to foreign labourers because they are paid a lot less. Local councils are also giving any major contracts to local volunteer groups, which will do the work for free. It's clear to see who's to blame for all of this and it's not something that is confined to one area or county.
The government also recently tried to amend the regulations regarding archaeological excavations of any type of development. They basically wanted to change the law which states that all sites that are in planning stage must be investigated and excavated, to determine if any historical remains are on the site. If this law had passed (which it luckily didn't) it would have meant the destruction of all commercial archaeology. Soon all digs will be run by universities and old crusties that don't have a clue what they're doing.
I know to some people this is meaningless, but why are we encouraged to choose our careers when it's becoming pretty impossible to find work?
