Help a newbie out!
Help a newbie out!
Hey there, My name is Ivan and I'm from Macedonia. I've been a metalhead for as long as I can remember.
Since I was about 13 I discovered Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. Started out with bands like Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple. Over the course of my musical development I've been mostly into Heavy Metal, Power Metal and so on.
In the last year or so, I've been introduced to Drum&Bass as a sort of a relaxing background music I can listen to all day.
Thing is, I've never been able to concentrate on my work/gaming while listening to Metal/Rock. I spend most of my day at the computer and I've found that Drum&Bass is less distracting to listen to while I work.
I've never bothered much with Artists or Albums when it came to electronic music. I just googled an online radio that plays Drum&Bass and Dubstep and simply let it rip all day long.
Seeing as how I've followed many Metal/Rock bands, I figured I'd find out what exactly I like and found this forum when looking for answers.
So, as a person with a weird musical background and no knowledge whatsoever when it comes to Dubstep or DnB, I need your help. I'm politely asking for any guidance you can provide. Recommending artists, styles, albums, compilations, online radios and whatever else is there to help me on my way. I generally tend to like music that has good melody, lots of bass, and interesting Dub sounds(it's what I call them)
Basically, I'm going to give you guys an example of what I like, and if you can, please tell me the style of Dubstep so I can find more stuff to listen to.

I love the music made by both MC Xander and Beardyman. I don't like the singing/rapping done by these guys but the beats and the music they create is awesome. So generally, less rapping/singing and more beats!
I'll give a few more examples as soon as I can. Thanks for the help!

first of all, check this thread out http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=167366 found here on the general discussion -part of the forum. it's unquestionably the most cohesive and diverse guide to dubstep and related music, laid out in the kind form of youtube links

I'm from a metal background too, I'd recommend checking out stuff like Distance or Vex'd as they both have a very dark, hard-hitting sound. DJ Youngsta's show on Rinse.Fm might be worth checking out too for darker sounds. The link topmo3 posted is a goldmine as well

Re: Help a newbie out!
I looked at the topic you posted and there's a lot of music there.
It will take quite some time to go through all of it. So far I haven't found anything I really like in that topic but there's still tons of music to listen.
Thanx to particle-jim I know I don't like dark Dubstep
It's a bit too quiet and I feel like there's nothing much going on.
What I was looking for is something a bit more agressive, with more dubstep sounds and a bigger emphasis on melody.
I appreciate the advice, but what I was really looking to find was something a bit like the first link I put in the opening post.
More like, what artists make similar music to what I linked, or what kind of dubstep it is since I'm sure there's tons of sub-genres.

Re: Help a newbie out!
^ lol pretty much. i can't believe how indolent people can be
oh im sorry, there isn't too much beatboxing dubstep out there (thank fucking god tbh) so i guess you have to keep on listening to shitty beardyman
seriously i cant believe anyone would want to listen to stuff like that or dub fx or some shit.. i mean it's just a gimmick, something that makes you maybe sneer when u see it live and that's it.. it's not for home listening that's how i see it
i'm gonna try once more... if you want approachable, melodic but hard hitting dubstep that's well produced you might like for example Joker, 501, some tracks by Kahn and other punch drunk releases etc.. it's called purple sound and here's a comprehensive guide to it http://rateyourmusic.com/list/TheScient ... ple_sound/

Re: Help a newbie out!
Jeez.. ok.
No need to act like douchebags. I searched the web to find similar music to what I liked. Nothing came up, for some reason there isn't much info out there when it comes to classifying artists into dubstep subgenres.
This website/forum was the only viable place I could ask and get real info apart from YahooAnswers.
I went into the Dubstep 101 topic, and almost every working youtube link was some sort of "oldschool" dubstep. I'm sure those songs are really important to the evolution of electronic music but it had nothing to do with the songs I know, so since I don't really give a shit about any history lesson, I figured I'd make my own topic and ask for some similar artists/tracks that I can listen to, or at least the name of the genre the song I linked belongs to.
Forgive me for not sharing your amazing knowledge of dubstep, your refined underground taste, and not being into all the "cool shit" you prefer.
I just heard a song, liked it and wanted to find something similar.
I came here to ask for some help. I asked politely and I expected a polite answer. Didn't expect to be trolled and treated like an idiot for liking a certain type of music.
That's the way of the internet these days so i should be used to it by now. Seems that I've come to the wrong place. I'm sorry to have bothered you. I'll just go back to searching "dubstep" on youtube and go through all the results till I can find something I like
Cheers

Re: Help a newbie out!
that may be because there are no subgenres
also you have 1-2 troll post and my rage towards subgenres/genres and already you're crying like a baby? this is still the interwebz and you expect it not to be? Nobodys even being douchy :/, not even trolling all suggestions seem to have been genuine
who gives a shit about who knows what
and I've found amazing stuff on youtube in the past so enjoy, bye
