Mother of all leads... and a growl

Post by R3b_Official » Sat Oct 05, 2013 6:26 pm

Been listening to excision and his new album and it has some crazy stuff! One of my favorite songs has this really gnarly lead, its very airy and gritty.

Couple sections you can hear different leads but i think they all come from a single patch or source with major filtering or effects for each.

At the intro, i hear a decent amount of vibrato and then it leads up to this very metallic low harsh sound(0:17); was transitioned very clean and smoothly, Comb filtering, delays, reverb, etc are added at this part and then finally leads up to the main lead, the one im talking about!

At 0:43 after that massive growl comes the lead and at 1:15, not sure if actually took the time to resample to get this lead like he does with his growls but its so in your face and bright. The pitch bends add so much more character than it should :corntard:

While on the topic of the song, any body have any tips for excison wah wow sort of movement? From filters or something inside the synth? I got something pretty close while modulating a phaser in ableton. Sweeping it left and up then sweeping it right and down. Was interesting pretty intereting... if add a couple of thoes and some compression over a couple of chains it could sound like it.

Probably processed -24 + 24 sine wave with scream filter and parabolic shaper.

Been working a bit on it and got something close in massive with Arctic on format but its not loud and airy yet. Time to use some controlled distortion.

Heres to pictures of a one shot of the sound, looks like a saw wave with add harmonics.

Could not get anything close :u: but i figure out the notes and the correct pitch bend though! Took me quite awhile and listening to to find out if it was portamento or simple pitch bend. Think its about 100% now i just need to get a good lead patch!

Heres the midi if anyone wants to take a crack at it :W:

In my opinion that really is the mother of all growls. And the lead is so robotic and alien like. This song in particular does an amazing job of representing destroid and the world the excision wanted to make
Remix i did for a beatport competition - check it out and give it a vote if you're interested

agreed, the growl isn't that big. Could creat this one in fm8 you can hear it with the eq cuts then I'll bus it out or bounce out clips to split the frequency a bit.

But that lead is driving me crazy! There is major vabrato in first lead and the one with the growl is just to big to be something is massive or sylenth....

All good with excision, downlink and stuff but this track is 99% Space Laces, just listen to the rest of the album, the other tracks don't even have a chance vs Bounce, also listen to Space Laces' own stuff its the same kind of sound, nevertheless that growl and that lead synth are so sick

Ive actually heard that. Someone on youtube commented saying that. Who does what in this song because im really curious. Like is the growl excision and that robotic lead is space laces? Because id agree bounce is by far the best song on destroids album but ive never really listened to space laces - any album in particular i should check out?

Alright not trying get sidetracked because I'd really like to talk about the sound design of these sounds which are excision btw. Space Lace does more of house stuff and isn't anything dark.

Check his soundcloud, he has like 4 songs and that's about it. Don't know were he comes from and what his style is but I'm 100% certain this is excision. This growl sounds more brostep sort of thing with fm8 and eq cuts. You can hear it pretty well and then excision just spiced it up to make it sound orginal. Giving it that dark sound that I think is from phaser. That can get something moveing with out making it vowely.

R3b, I think im hearing heavy VCX (FL's Vocoder) on both those sounds, they're really moist so I'm thinking that, maybe some parallel chorus/phaser/flanger, watch out with the distortion on this one since it can ruin that wet sound.

Space laces doesn't use much soundcloud and social networks so don't guide yourself by that, you guys need to check Digital Gangsta and Excision - X Rated (Space Laces Remix)... you'll then realize this track is 100% space laces, excision growls don't stand a chance against his.

I'd agree, sounds like Space Laces squelchy basses, rather than Excisions more digital robotic sounds.

Try messing with various wavetables in massive, using bend+/- modes - this can give you some nice wet sounds. It sounds layered to me, there's a second much wider version of the sound filling in the high end and giving stereo width. Also a lot of the impact of the sound imo comes from the slap of the kick that hits on the "wow" part of the sound.

Space laces has an incredibly silly personality, this song sounds to be mostly him, especially the lead. I tried making the bass by laying a basic supersaw and used seamless's harmonic detune lazer since it sounds very close to the bass (Almost the same notes too).

Too many people to quote back!

but now looking back now i can see this is a space laces track.... but im still lost on what to do? I tried messing around with bend + and - in massive but didnt get anything good. Got some random wicked sound from fooling around but nothing pertaining to the lead. Was trying to recreate what seamless did in his detuned lazer thing in massive but harmor and massive are two completely different beast and i can actually hear a bit of harmor on this lead sound(ill try something in alchemy) I dont know but it just has that certain feel and sound like every other synth has to it and you can clearly pick it out when listening to certain tracks.

Ill try do something extremly basic with some slightly detuned saws with a bunch a unision and modulate the pitch cutoff with an ENV with the pitch cutoff going from 0-0.08 which actually got this really wicked phasing and metallic sound to it! Try it out sometime :6:

Start with that basic patch and start to layer it with something an octave higher for that high end stereo sound. Then ill get to the processing of it

Getting pretty close to it!
