There is a time and place for Netsky. Usually when you're pilled up to the gills in a field somewhere (Glasto/Lovebox/Bestival/etc) with a group of mates dancing like a lunatic with a can of warm cider in your hand. Then it makes perfect sense.

Ah yes, DSF. Where Cool is King and the 'mainstream' dance must be shunned.

And no SMILING! Yes, you at the back! Just stand by the stack with your hood up and occasionally nod your head/throw you gun finger up/twiddle your finger in the air liking you're fingering on a merry-go-round when you want a spin back.

Why the discussion

fuck off Netsky
Genevieve wrote:But yeah, that'd be "my unpopular opnion". All in all, dnb is better this century than it was last. A lot more diverse, with more flavors and sounds. The "jungle era" was ridden by bland, uncreative, SAMEY, bullshit looped breaks with the same bass sounds and samples. We only remember the good tunes with the good drums, while most of it was utterly boring. Tbh, when someone jumps into a dnb discussion and only talks about how good 'jungle' is, I will assume they're trying to be elitist on drum & bass without doing any of the homework.
I agree to some extent, there's a lot of bland tripe yes but a lot of diversity too with different breaks/bass sounds/samples, just not that easy to find. Most people play the same tunes over and over which makes it harder

Ehh for the most part you had dark tunes, soulful tunes, reggae tear-out Amen tunes, or "deep tunes", but they usually used the same elements. The breaks being looped may be different, but most breaks used played the same 2-step rhythm.

I don't HATE jungle btw, just saying that jungle-nostalgia is all based on the gems we all love. Yeah, Soundmurderer by Remarc and Secret Lliason by Source Direct are undisputed classics. But they're not overly representative of jungle as a whole. There's a reason we remember those tunes; they're the fucking shit! Remarc wasn't your typical junglist, chopping up an Amen like he did didn't become a mainstay until around 2000 when Americans started producing retro-jungle out the ass. When he was out, most guys would either loop a break or just loop something they'd rearranged. When techstep came out, I feel it was already way more diverse than jungle was (though it too kind of homogenized before it split-up into darkstep and neuro).

Garethorn's observation isn't just a random occurence. All the same tunes get posted cuz those are good. There are hidden gems too, but those too are rarities in a fuckin' universe full of toast samples and 808 sines.

Compare that to dnb these days with drumfunk, dancefloor, crossbreed/skullstep, half-time, I could go on. There's just way more going on now.

It's logical tbh. You see more diversity later than you do in the beginning with any style of music. Heavy metal went from being mid-tempo blues rock to anything from 300 bpm death metal brutality to ambient and hypnotic black metal. Rock music as a whole went from being adapted r&b to.. I don't even have to explain it. But yeah.

Yeah I see what you mean and I agree to an extent
but you have to keep in mind it was 20 years ago, they didn't have the equipment we have these days, you could compare it to Skrenga making tunes on ps if I recall correctly to Skrilly using whatever DAW.
Uncle dugs' interviews with Goldie & Ratpack (not sure) explained this a bit. Like grooverider before jungle would just mix 2 tunes and for 1 minute they worked beautifully together and created jungle a like tunes, later on it escalated in what you say but I've been listening to a lot of sets lately and you can really hear the evolution and it's awesome, so many good stuff but indeed later on the same tunes get rinsed more and more and it get's tedious like dubstep nowadays most artist rinsing the big tunes from back in the days inbetween their newer stuff forgetting about the good stuff from '07 - '9-10 and other genre influenced stuff. Also sticking to 1 side of the genre yuck

but theres a lot of variety in those earlier sets, I think this is different for jungle, really lot's of awesome tunes
