Best ever year for music?
I'd have to go for 1993. I was 8, so i'm not fronting that i was at the front of jungle raves at the time, but retrospectively speaking, and for music that has been a massive influence to me, the amount of amazing US hiphop and jungle that year is insane.....all those classic hiphop lps...it would actually be a pretty close call between 93 and 94 for those reasons, but im sticking with 93.
If you had to narrow it down to just one year, what would you go for & reasons? would anyone pick a very recent year?

Re: Best ever year for hiphop?
'93 is the obvious choice... 36 Chambers, Doggystyle, Midnight Marauders, Enta Da Stage, Bacdafucup - I'd definitely count it as the best year due to so many classic releases and being relatively early in hiphop's mainstream heyday there wasn't too much pop-whoring going on.
I'd throw a controversial curveball in for 2000 for shaping the next decade's mainstream explosion pretty effectively - Eminem - MMLP, Jay-Z - The Dynasty, Ghostface - Supreme Clientele, Outkast - Stankonia, MOP - Warriorz, Dead Prez - Let's Get Free, Common - Like Water For Chocolate, Bumpy Knuckles - Industry Shakedown, J5 - Quality Control, Prodigy - HNIC, Nelly - Country Grammar plus a ridiculous explosion of conscious/backpack stuff.
But yeah, it's pretty much 1993 with an outside shout for 1997.

2000 would have an even stronger shout had Mos Def held Black on Both Sides back by a couple of months

Oh, wait, I was answering for the Best Ever Year for Hip Hop, because that's all that matters, obviously.
If we're doing ALL music then 1993 gets even more love. Original fucking Nuttah, In Utero (and Urban Cookie Collective - The Key, The Secret)
Clichéd shout for 1965 - Dylan going electric and releasing Like A Rolling Stone is a helluva moment in modern music.

Dude's right about everything. That might be the most sensible thing I've ever seen written under the umbrella of Hip Hop.wub wrote:That reminds me, saw this and thought of you;magma wrote:'93 is the obvious choice... 36 Chambers, Doggystyle, Midnight Marauders, Enta Da Stage, Bacdafucup - I'd definitely count it as the best year due to so many classic releases and being relatively early in hiphop's mainstream heyday there wasn't too much pop-whoring going on.

I can't really see them being your cup of tea to be completely honest with you, most people who have heard of them really don't like them at all but for me it's the most special music ever and nothing else even comes closemurky21 wrote:i suppose i should listen to some cardiacs Jim considering that particularly glowing recommendation

Re: Best ever year for music?
Incidentally, my most enjoyed years for music are 1995 (best year for school discos because it was my year's turn to have them on Friday nights. We were 13 and someone's parents were away every time so we'd invade their house and play Cotton Eye Joe until the sun came up), 2001 (my personal sweet spot for finding well programmed hiphop clubs combined with being old enough to actually go to them and having a girl to take), 2007 (my favourite year for raving ever).

2006 and 2001 are up there for me in my lifetime.
Re: Best ever year for music?
I'd go for 1994 as that was when i first started going to Jungle raves. Though i kind of wish that i was a couple of years older as i would have probably picked 1992 or 1993. 1994 was also a fantastic year for Hip hop and Dancehall
