seems like its a bunch of delegated ideas done by a load of stylised sycophants created by a plastic master with his eye on his cash phallys.

Who would you say has the most influence?
I think it is still Hirst. And though I don't necessarily appreciate his work, I can see why one could argue that's where the actual discussion is at.
Cai Guo-Qiang is pretty dope and contemporary,- kind of like taxadermic fengshui or something

It's just a like a shitty version of early Prurient with all the feedback loops and effects taken out.

I don't know...pretty sure he's still working...
I'll go look up the dictionary definition of contemporary...I'll be back in a sec..
Contemporary is the historical period that is immediately relevant to the present and is a certain perspective of modern history. - Wiki
so this definition hinges on historical relevance...not necessarily, a time frame
I had picked out these two pieces as curious anomalies...because of their retro nature
I really like them - but they are obviously - you know - a form of kitsch
the ironic t-shirt - part of me likes it - but I get really sick of the attitude.

here's one that I really, really like...and I'll tell you why...

The idea on the surface is super simple - It's almost formal...
just a squiggle that ends with a flared horn shape...
but - when you really contemplate it - a bunch of really cool ideas and references start to emerge...
but none of them are sarcastic...except for maybe the hercules struggling with snakes
...but that's the classic struggle right...
but what I like the most - is that - although it has a monumental scale...
It still has a handmade feel - as if it's papermache (maybe different in person - but reason to go)
- that anyone could do, if they really went at it
- saved all your neighbors newspapers for a year or whatever
so it's not technically or monatarily unacheivable - like a lot of the tech heavy stuff...
which can be very off limiting...dampens the inter-personal dialogue
and it makes a really strong visual statement - you can't really walk by that without experiencing it.

I would say comtemporary means you have influence now and not just that you carried on working.

yeah there's a lot of collecting & agglomeration going on in the name of art
obsessive arrangement of bones, shit, household rubbish & whatever
the more expensive the components, the more ludicrous the price tag
the more "maximal", generally the more desperate for admiration of the time taken
everybody who wants to be is now "an artist"
nothing much needed but a gimmick or a rationale
weak ideas becoming art thru anal execution
skilful technique labelled art to avoid being derided craft
meanwhile most transformative art
is happening through performance that avoids being merely outrageous
and environmental art riffing on nature & sustainability
with works that can't be bought or owned
unlike the plethora of video artistes
vying to capture the attention of screen addicts,
Kanye West or advertising agencies
(OK, that's cruel but can you do something about the tedious drivel that wastes my precious life minutes)
apart from the many fantastic painters who transcend illustration,
imo the best two contemporary artists (art teams)
who actually deliver surprise, beauty and inspiration
are Dan Chihuly & Anish Kapoor.

Nice one.
Like you think it's somehow detrimental to the piece/track that the components are taken from another context, which is a matter of taste, like how I'm sure a lot of people think Daft Punk is as valid as the disco they 'borrowed'.
Not that I disagree with how art can be a 'hat' you wear around town - but this notion is very reminiscent of how people confuse what music that contain samples can be.yeah there's a lot of collecting & agglomeration going on in the name of art
